McNeill played for Southend 41 times between 1962-1964 scoring three goals along the way. He died this month aged 85. I only picked up the fact that he had died from the Wigan fans board as he managed Wigan twice. He was beyond my time watching Southend, but others on here will no doubt remember him as a player.

He was a smashing little player
In those days I think we called them "inside forwards"
Good passer and didn't dodge tackles
I've still got his autograph tucked away somewhere

Typical pint sized Scottish ball playing inside forward, regarded as a midfield general, whose best days were behind him when he signed for Southend from Brighton aged around 30. Don't remember him being very popular with the crowd. That was when the severe winter weather prevented much football between January and March 1963. We were looking good until the enforced break, McKinven and Woodley on the wings in good form, but never got it together on resumption as results tailed off and we finished 8th.

Decent and skilful footballer.

Thanks for the memories Ian.

RIP
