Glad to see this forum back (thanks :cricko: ) as I bloody love the World Cup. Not just the games either - always loads of great stories around the tournament. So I'm going to post a few on here in the lead-up. Do join in!

1) The 1938 Finals were a straight knock-out. So Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) travelled half way across the globe to France to lose their only game 6-0. Thanks for coming lads.

Uruguayan defender Jose Batista holds the proud record of the fastest red card in World Cup History. He was sent off just 56 seconds into the match after he committed a high studded slide tackle to the back of the legs of Scottish midfielder Gordon Strachan

When England won the World Cup, the FA bought presents for the wives of the players. They all got a pair of scissors.

What was the score in the end? How many did Uruguay win by?

Sadly 0.0 full time

Could you imagine if this was Southend playing against 10 men for 89 mins and not scoring, the forum would be in melt down:hilarious:

you can understand it a bit though. A Scottish ginger midget is a pretty tempting target. :winking:

The referees that have called the most in-play penalty kicks are Arthur Ellis (5 in 6 matches) and Edgardo Codesal (5 in 3 matches).

And yes for the older viewers Arthur Ellis from" Its a knock out" days with Stuart Hall and Eddie "Oop and under" Waring

Younger readers will have no idea who I'm posting abou

Cameroon also went out of the 1982 World Cup having not lost a game; Italy (who didn't lose during the tournament) pipped them to second place in the group on goals scored.

And for those not familiar with Ozzie's reference to the Germans cheating, here is an article on The Disgrace of Gijón

Valdemar de Brito was the first player to ever miss a penalty at the World Cup and he played for Brazil in 1934 World Cup

Good job no Southend penalty takers play for their country nowadays

Canada's 1986 World Cup song. Marvellous.

Of countries who have qualified for the World Cup, only Cuba and Indonesia have had a longer spell since their last qualification than Wales.

Iceland are the smallest country to reach the world cup finals population approx 335,000 , the previous country to hold the record was Trinidad and Tobago population approx 1.3 million

Couldn't have happened to a nicer person. If the Scottish team were taller, maybe the tackle wouldn't have looked so high

Before the 1950 final, 22 gold medals were made with each Brazilian player's name imprinted on them. Even the mayor of Rio got into the act and delivered a speech with the words "You, players, who in less than a few hours will be hailed as champions by millions of compatriots! You, who have no rivals in the entire hemisphere! You, who will overcome any other competitor! You, who I already salute as victors!" A victory song, "Brasil Os Vencedores" ("Brazil The Victors"), was composed, practised, and ready to be played after the final.

On the morning of 16 July 1950, the streets of Rio de Janeiro were bustling with activity. An improvised carnival was organised, with thousands of signs celebrating the world title, and chants of "Brazil must win!". This spirit never ceased, right up until the final minutes of the match, which filled the Maracanã Stadium with a paid attendance of 173,830 and an actual attendance estimated to be over 200,000.

Then Uruguay won. Hahahaha/

Nice one Naps.

Although - and here's another oddity I guess - it wasn't the final as such. They had a round robin stage with the other two 'semi finalists' (Sweden and Spain) but, as luck would have it, this turned out to be effectively the final as Brazil and Uruguay were the only two teams who could top the table with one round of games left. Brazil only needed a draw to win the World Cup.

What I didn't realise until today was that the Spain v Sweden game was played at the same time as the 'Maracanazo'. Slightly smaller crowd, mind.
