The "oddity" of the WC draw is surely that England should qualify from their group in Russia in June.
"The British government is free to make a decision about its participation in the World Cup," he said.

But nobody has the right to insult the Russian people - who defeated Nazism and lost more than 25 million people - by comparing our country to Nazi Germany.

    That goes beyond common sense."

Not that England fans seem to have this need to belittle their own home nation?

This tiny little stadium in Antibes - now host to a French eighth tier side - has hosted a World Cup Finals fixture.

If the football was rubbish you could always take in the view. I can think of worse places to be.

Remember when Kuwait's FA president got a goal scored against his team chalked off?

I'd not seen this story before...in 1930, Bolivia's players wore white shirts with black lettering which spelt out VIVA URUGUAY.

In 1978 France played Hungary in Group in Mar Del Plata. However, both teams turned up in the changed kits of white. Neither brought their first choice. France ended up playing in a green and white striped number (resembling a pacer sweet, for those with long memories) which was borrowed from a local side from the Argentine third tier.

Guiseppe Bergomi played in four World Cups but didn't play a single World Cup qualifying game

1982 - called in to the squad after the qualifiers
1986 - Italy qualified as winners
1990 - Italy qualified as hosts
1998 - called in to the squad after the qualifiers

Not so much of an oddity, but it looks like Rafael Marquez of Mexico will be headed to his fifth World Cup, equalling Lothar Matthaus' record for an outfield player.

Mexican goalie Antonio Carbajal also played in five World Cups, from 1950 to 1966. But only 48 caps in total, which I guess indicates how little international football they must have played. And he's still alive too, at the grand old age of 88.
