World Cup oddities

Not so much of an oddity, but it looks like Rafael Marquez of Mexico will be headed to his fifth World Cup, equalling Lothar Matthaus' record for an outfield player.

Mexican goalie Antonio Carbajal also played in five World Cups, from 1950 to 1966. But only 48 caps in total, which I guess indicates how little international football they must have played. And he's still alive too, at the grand old age of 88.

In 1978, Hungary were up against France. In the days of many people still having black and white tellies, red v blue meant a colour clash.

However, both teams arrived in their white change kits, so France had to borrow a green and white striped shirt from local side Atlético Kimberley

"For those of you watching in black and white, Spurs are in the all-yellow strip." Well said Motty.

The World Cup Causes Increased Birth Rates in Host CountriesNine months after Germany hosted the World Cup in 2006 their country’s birthrate increased more than 10 percent.
A 10 percent increase may not seem like much, but birth rate is something that’s extremely stable. Since 2006, the European Union birthrate has only changed .07%. What’s more, Germany’s birth is one of the lowest in the EU.
So why did this happen? Well, there are two fundamental reasons:

  1. Beer
  2. The fun nature and excitement of the World Cup. Fun and exciting events tend to make people happier. When women are happy, it releases hormones that make it easier to get pregnant.

Brazil 2014 - 8% increase
Germany 2006 - 10% increase
Japan 2002 - 9% increase

Brazil’s $14.5 billion dollar price tag to host in 2014 compared to the cost of the last five tournaments combined of $15.37 billion dollars. Amazingly, Brazil spent almost as much on one tournament as the past five countries spent on the five tournaments. A breakdown of the costs can be seen below.1994 (US) – $30 million
1998 (France) – $340 million
2002 (Japan/South Korea) – $5 billion
2006 (Germany) – $6 billion
2010 (South Africa) – $4 billion

Russia's costs are also expected to be about $14billion and some are saying it will be more expensive that Brazil

England Manager Gareth Southgate, dislocates his shoulder during a solo 10k run outside the England teams national camp!!

How???

Who did he run into??..... the KJB?

Not content with scoring important goals it's nice to see that Harry Kane has invented a time machine in the England training camp and has travelled back in time to play double bass for Deacon Blue

Not sure whether this belongs on here or not, but the domed palace thing in Moscow which you can see from the BBC studio window was built in the 1600s for Ivan the Terrible. It seems that Ivan asked the bloke that built it whether he could build another. Mr builder said he thought he could so Ivan had him blinded. Nice bloke, not. Info courtesy of a BBC presenter.

Not so much as an odditie, but Senegal made history yesterday by becoming the 1st team to be eliminated from the World Cup on the Fifa Fair Play rule, after finishing on the same points, same goal difference, goals scored, goals conceded and head to head as Japan.

Nigerian player John Mikel Obi was told that his father had been kidnapped just before kick off when he was playing against Argentina.

Most unfortunate, but what makes it more odd, is that it's the 2nd time his father has been kidnapped, he was kidnapped before back in 2011 when he played for Chelsea.

How the heck do you get kidnapped twice in your life!!...

Wouldn't it have been cheaper to hire Liam Nesson to find him rather than keep paying the ransoms.

And he just paid up did he? Interesting  Where does he live.

LOL

You know I was thinking just the same thing.

If it's to be believed, apparently Roman Abramovich paid the 1st time around when he was at Chelsea, but he had to cough up himself this time around.

BTW, A1.....The current going rate is about £21,000 a time, if your thinking of moving into that line of work. :Winking:

But with a good agent (like myself)..... I reckon i could get it up to £22,000 and will haggle for a couple of dozen signed Chelsea shirts too, that we could through onto the bonfire.

Just read that no team who has equalised in a knockout round in the last minute of normal or time added on has gone on to win the tie.
6 times including the 66 final, 3 on pens and 3 in extra time...
