And I saw them all! The 4 at Peterborough was my favourite. We'd been crap all season were flirting with having to apply for re-election to Div 4 and the result was Peterborough 3 Best 4

A true hattrick is scoring all 3 goals in a row. So if you score goals number 1,2 and 5 in 5-0 win, that is not a true hattrick

From Wiki

Football has also extended the term to include the phrase perfect hat-trick, achieved when a player scores one right-footed goal, one left-footed goal and one headed goal within one match.[10][11] In Germany, the term (lupenreiner) Hattrick ("flawless hat-trick") refers to when a player scores three goals in a row in one half without the half-time break or a goal scored by another player interfering the performance.

So you're both right if we include our European bretheren.

The term hattrick comes from cricket and that has always been 3 wickets in a row with consecutive balls. It still counts even if you have a break overnight etc.

Yep, spot on and derives from a collection for the feat achieved, which resulted in the presentation of a hat to the bowler, in recognition.

Bobby Gilfillan got two 4s (v. Shrewsbury & Colchester) and a hat trick against Workington between 1963-1965.
