The Spain thread

It looks very detailed.I'll certainly read it when I have time. This sort of story isn't new btw, as I saw for myself when I was in Buenos Aires to visit our younger daughter 3 years ago.Saw Los Madres and a museum in tribute to Los Disparecedos. Also visited a facility where lefties were detained (very near River Plate's ground-inmates could hear the crowd in the World Cup matches in 1978).

I saw them too when I was out there ten years ago. Such a dignified protest.

Hope you had a nice weekend Tangled. Have you had a chance to look on the BBC websites about those missing babies yet. Lot of innocent women are praying someone will help them and start to speak publicly about this horrendous crime.

Iv'e read that Pep Guardiola's private jet was searched by Spanish police when it landed in Barcelona as they were looking for the exiled Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont, and now he's been fined by the FA for wearing a yellow ribbon in support of the two imprisoned politicians.

That's the sort of daft rumour that circulates among some wierdos here sometimes too.Get a grip.:winking:

(If Puigdemont is in exile it's a self-imposed one. He's also the ex-leader of the Catalan parliament).

Edit.Do beg your humble.Just seen the story reported on Spanish/Catalan news.Thought it was a fake news item before.

Pep will quite rightly get fined for wearing political insignia by the FA.

Bear in mind, the fact that Pep's private plane was searched twice recently at Barcelona airport does not constitute proof that the Spanish police were looking for Puigdemont-after all he's currently holed up in Brussels not Manchester.

Is that right that his yellow ribbon is to remind people that Spain are holding some Catalans in prison.

Interestingly, two leading Catalan politicians, including the Mayoress, have boycotted the Spanish's King's visit to the WMC.

Given that over 3,000 Catalan businesses (including the Caixbank, where my wife and I have accounts) transferred their HQ outside Catalonia in Q4 last year,Catalonia certainly cannot afford to lose a high profile event, like the WMC in the future.

More significant still, was the opinion poll released at the beginning of last week, which showed that the number of Catalans in Catalonia who support independence has now declined from 48.7 % last October to 40.05 % with 53.9 % rejecting independence.

Be careful about opinion polls, they have known to be wrong in recent times. Maybe people who commission them just lie.

What charges are the people held on and what is likely to happen to them ?

Catalan society is deeply fractured atm and a 50/50 split (declining since the fracas of the recent regional elections last December sounds about right,IMO.

Full charges haven't officially been brought yet but it is,of course, illegal to declare a republic unilaterally, anywhere in Spain, on an ipso facto basis, according to the Spanish Constitution.

What is likely to to happen to the 4 jailed Catalan politicians is of course anyone's guess, especially as the Spanish judiciary is quite rightly independent of the Spanish state.I certainly have a lot more time for them, personally, than for those Catalan politicians who've absconded to Brussels and Geneva.FWIW,I think they should be out on bail before facing trial. However, Mariano Rajoy's right-wing PP government in Madrid are clearly playing hardball over this, which could well lose them votes at the next Spanish GE.

So do you support the fact they are in jail and would you support a prison sentence.

As I said, I'd prefer they were out on bail to be better able to defend themselves in court, however the Spanish authorities have argued they'd flee the country, as some of their colleagues in the Catalan parliament have already done.As for your second question,I believe people should be held accountable for their actions and that includes elected Catalan politicians.

Yes shouldn't we all. Do you think what they have done should result in a prison sentence.

I'm not going to set myself up as judge and jury.In an ideal world though, any prison sentence would be equivalent to the time they've already spent in jail.

Pep defies the FA by continuing to wear the yellow ribbon at last nights Wembley Cup final against Arsenal.

I believe the FA have given him until March 3rd to account for his actions.

Why not you have before and Spain should be your specialist subject ( despite your confusion over historic Military aid).

Correct me if I'm wrong but are you saying they should serve a short prison sentence?
