We haven't lost a League match at Oldham for 20 years, our last such defeat coming in 1998 when Bruce Grobbelaar was in goal for them and the match was refereed by a promising young official, Mike Dean.

A man with a good football name takes charge of tomorrow's match. It is David Webb, a 40 year old official in his 10th season as a Football League referee from Stanley in County Durham. He is a keen cricketer and followed Sunderland avidly in his younger years. He took up refereeing after seeing an advert from the FA in the FA Cup Final programme when watching Sunderland at Wembley.

We have seen remarkably little of him in those 10 seasons and when we have it hasn't gone well. Not necessarily his fault though.

The first of his just four previous Southend games was at Tranmere in 2009/10 for a 2-0 defeat when apparently he did okay. Yellows for McCormack, Barrett and Laurent.

Next came aother away defeat the following season - the 3-1 loss at Accrington. Yellows for Hall, Prosser and two (and therefore a red) for Mohsni. Also a couple of yellows for them.

Next Southend match was the home cup tie in 2011/12 against ....... Oldham. A 1-1 draw and lots of cards. Hall again, Mohsni again, Timlin and Phillips and three of theirs. The incentive of a trip to Anfield was not enough to get the players up for a good performance in the replay, except for Mohsni who was too "up for it" and picked up a couple more yellows !

Finally the early season match at Fleetwood in 2015/16. Another 1-1 draw and Noel Hunt was our only yellow; they managed two.

The number of cards shown in those earlier matches is not representative of his normal refereeing and his card count is well below average with just 70 yellows and 2 reds (both in the same game) from 32 matches. Despite not being a SG2 full-time referee he has been given a couple of Championship matches lately so someone must think he's doing okay.

Assisting will be Graeme Fyvie from Sunderland and, making his Southend debut, Craig Taylor from Staffiord. Fourth Official is Richard Bartlett, a Civil engineering consultant from nearby Sale.
