I read The Guardian and most CIFers still don't understand the causes of the current financial crisis five years after it started.
I will admit that their knowledge of subtitled black and white arthouse Eastern European cinema, expensive gastropubs and the current state of the property market in Provence and Tuscany is second to none.

Well you said it, even as a throwaway statement/joke, it doesn't make any sense.
Actually your comment is somewhat insulting (which you probably meant it to be) to me as my Mother and Auntie decided to leave Essex some time ago and left my Grandmothers care to me. I go and visit her weekly to sort out bits she needs done around the house and take her shopping.
Just because I'm ambitious in my job, it doesn't mean I'm the same at home or in my family situation. I try to make as much time as possible for my little girl, but at the end of the day I have a job that means that I have to work late every now and then (without overtime pay) and don't end up seeing her as much as I'd like to. If I lost my job and struggled to find another, I'd be up the creek as I don't believe in taking handouts from the government, unlike you lefties who were born with your arms extended.
I'm certainly not greedy, I just want the best and am happy to work hard for it.

If got a pound for everyime I've heard "I don't believe in taking handouts from the government" I'd be slightly better off than I am now. If you ended up with no income, and you don't have any savings to fall back on (and frankly, why should you need to fall back on them), then beliefs or not, you're down the dole office.
Tell you what, if I lost my job, I, like millions and millions of others, would have absolutely no choice in matter.
Why the heck is this thread still going? The funeral is over, we didn't get a day off - surely end of story?
