Canvey Island Vs Southend United

bucket&spade.f.c

SUFC Tour Organiser 2012
I was down park lane last night and it seems Southend are playing Canvey on Wednesday the 28th Jan in a fund raiser for the club as they seem to have less money then us, after the chairman left, its £8 Adults, £4 cons and £1 kids I have no idea what kind of team we will put out but still be nice to get as many fans through the gate to Support Local football.

Its not on either website yet as I only think the posters at Park Lane went up yesterday

As much as I love you Gareth I would rather see Canveys demise rather then help them

also God if your there can you make Chelmsford City crap and Colchester and Orient.

Cheers God

Much Luv

Amen

Is anyone going to this? I understand there will be a few trialists playing so it would be interesting to hear how they did.

I detest Canvey Island and their sad little (and I mean little in every way) bumch of fans and have no desire whatsoever to put money into their club.

Should have merged with Chelsmford when they had the chance.

I'm feeling you there player!

What a pity that some posters wish to put petty rivalry over and above supporting their team and in the process help a club run entirely by their fanbase. I would imagine ex-Gull Steve Tilson in particular would be disappointed at this childish attitude.

It may have escaped some people's attention that the odious Jeff King and his minions have long since left Park Lane and that Canvey are now a football club in every sense.

The only consideration should be if you have the time, money and inclination to go and not hide behind some of the more ridiculous reasons put forward on here.

Concur in entirety. Very well stated IMO.

The earlier posters should maybe consider adopting a more sporting attitude.

why arent southend making anything of it surely they should be saying to the fans yeah we have arranged a game, mainly for trialists so we are trying on the transfer front

Great post couldn't agree more, I spend a lot of time down at the football club and would be gutted if they had to fold and am sure a few 100 fans would be gutted too,

It is a small football club and as said above is run by the fans, wednesday one of the linos will be the head guy from the supporter club who said to me sunday he would love to see as many southend fans Wednesday so we could have a good lugh and a good atmos

I will be there for sure and hope to see a few others

That's what I said but I spoke to Ian Joyce and he thinks he might me playing so I don't think it be a whole team of youth and trialists, I know we low on numbers but could see okeefe (if he don't play tomorrow) Foran,Scannell so it could be a ok side and well worth a tip

Well since the first team are in action the night before, in West Yorks, think it does not need to be said.

I hope that as many Shrimpers as possible can make the short trip to Canvey on Wednesday night. Of course, anyone heading up to Leeds tomorrow night may find that finances are a little tight, and I wouldn't blame anyone for not forking out another tenner or so to head to Park Lane, but they'll be plenty that won't, and it'd be great to get a decent turn-out at Park Lane.

Unfortunately, Canvey may suffer from the fall-out of Jeff King's tenure on the Island, but the genuine supporters (those amongst the 325 that turned up for a Conference fixture at home to Forest Green Rovers and have continued to back the club, first in Ryman League Division One and now in the Ryman Premier) have very mixed feelings about his spell there.

King helped to give them some of their finest moments, getting them into the 'Proper' stages of the F.A. Cup and into the Conference, where they briefly flirted with entry into the League. But he lost his enthusiasm for the club just when they needed it. Those that are left are extremely passionate about their local club, and are restoring a real community feel to the set-up.

Without local non-League clubs, we wouldn't have seen the likes of Peter Taylor (who we signed from Canvey), Steve Tilson (Basildon United and Witham Town), Michael Kightly (Basildon United), Freddy Eastwood, Mitchell Cole or Gary Hooper (all Grays Athletic) to name but a few.

Those matches against Canvey in the F.A. Cup were excellent local derbies. The replay, when Jay Smith belted home a last-minute winner for ten-man Blues, witnessed a simply fantastic moment. It also provided me with one of my favourite-ever quotes from a Southend manager, when David Webb declared: "Jeff King said that he would have his finest hour - he did, but we had the last half-an-hour."

So, if you can come down and support a local non-League side, please do. In the process, you'll get a friendly welcome, a bit of banter from the Canvey boys and the chance to see some up-and-coming Shrimpers stars of the future. And all for a under a tenner.

Well said, Exiled Shrimper.

Personally I'm pleased when local sides do well. I'd be quite happy to see Grays and Chelmsford getting up to league 2.

The problem with Canvey was that despite all their success on the field, the crowd didn't really increase. Like a lot of non-league teams, Canvey could not survive at conference level without extra funding, ie Jeff King's money. Recently, Hornchurch suffered the same fate as Canvey and Maidstone could go the same way. Even SPL club Gretna had to resign their position in the scottish league once the external funding was lost.

Your opinion and one to which you are perfectly entitled.

I would say however that I watched several Canvey games whilst they were in the Conference and found their fans to be some of the most
cliquey and insular people I have ever had the misfortune to come across.

Seems if you haven't been to every game home and away for the last ten years then your simply not "one of the gang" in their opinion and although they complained about not attracting fans to what was let's face it, a pretty decent standard of football in the Conference, the welcome to outsiders at Park Lane was never warm to "unknown faces" in my expereince, hence much of the reason why attendances never went up.

Added to this, they hate Southend with a passion yet are only too happy to say "we hope to see as many Southend fans there on the night" when they don't really want us but desperately need our money coming through the turnstiles to help their club out of the mire. No thanks - have a nice night but I have no interest nor desire to put my hard earned cash into that club and that's a fact.

I have to agree here if it were for a diffrent team yes but Canvey no!
