Which is of course one of the problems with 'official' sites. Everything is so vanilla. That doesn't excuse the many spelling errors, inaccuracies, etc. of course...

Not even vanilla I'm afraid, more totally flavourless:

Let's look at today's "on this day"

https://www.southendunited.co.uk/news/2017/october/on-this-day-4th-october/

Who wants to read about beating a strong Tottenham team (incl Gazza, Lineker etc) 3-2 at Roots Hall when you can read about a 1-1 draw with Tranmere and find out who scored their goal. Also that "Danny Schofield scored the winner for the Huddersfield in the 89th minute to deny Newman’s side a win.". Surely that would have been denying a draw. Does the writer understand football ??

Well here it is anyway

Sorry, I couldn't find any footage of that match at Tranmere.

Jesus wept. I wasn't living in the UK at the time of that Spurs game but can clearly remember following updates via BFBS (forces radio). Surely one of the all-time great cup nights for us?

You could possibly justify not including the Spurs game if this feature only covered the very recent past, but that Tranmere game was in 1991!

Still one of the best atmosphere's I can remember at the Hall!

What a night.

Don't think I've known Roots Hall rocking as much as that.

ps The Man with the Tan would surely have been playing as a winger not a defender

In 1965/6 we beat York 3-0 on this day. Much more interesting.

Yep, it was Ray White's debut. A clean sheet away from home and no hint of what was to follow.

Smillie, Slater and Slack got the goals. Smith might have joined all the "S"s on the scoresheet if he hadn't been injured and substituted by Chris Barnard.

It was the first season of substitutes and Chris Barnard was our 2nd, 3rd and 4th substitution. Only one substitute and the departing player had to be injured. We only made 12 substitutions in 52 matches. I knew the idea would never catch on.

It is funny really , when supporters talk about great games a Roots Hall , it is always Villa , Chelsea , Liverpool , Man Utd and QPR , Spurs game never really gets a mention .

Back during a time when the top clubs fielded strong teams in this competition, even against lower ranked teams. Most of that Tottenham squad (bar Thomas and Fenwick on first glance) played in the FA Cup final v Forest a few years later.

That night against Spurs. Great game to watch, and if only David Crown had buried his chance instead of hitting the post..... One of my favourite matches, up there with the 4-2 comeback against Newport County.... Was hoarse for days...

Back on topic, about ranting about our club's lack of accuracy....

I didn't know whether to post this here or in the Southend V Reading Match ratings....

So...... According to our clubs official site & many thanks to the social media department, for making me chuckle.

All being, we should take this as a fact, as it's from the OS.

So, with that in account, I think Phil did an amazing job on Tuesday night, considering he was up against the young energy from the youth of Reading, more so,....especially..... considering he fielded 5 players with a combined age of nearly 584 years old! :hilarious:

If we're going off topic, then:

....... now for something completely different.
On this day in 1969, Monty Python's Flying Circus was first broadcast.

Yep, amazing night. I was right in front of the sending off, on the halfway line in front of the West Bank.

Time for another airing I think :-

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't David Crown hit the post late on? That would have made it 4-2 on the night.

FFS, I only I had read on!

On this day both Richie Benaud and Tony Greig were born. RIP Gents

...... and on this day, a little earlier, New Zealand was discovered.

None of which, of course, compares with the official website's chosen event - a dismal 2-0 defeat at Bury in front of 2,647 supporters 33 years ago today. It was one of Peter Ellis's dozen games for the club, half of which I saw and all of which I had completely forgotten.
