The Business
Went out with my mate who is one of the men behing the scenes at Hornchurch and got some interesting gossip. Now this bloke is a really good mate of mine and is well in with a lot of the non legaue players.

Two weeks ago a number of non-league clubs went on tour to Majorca. These clubs included players from Hornchurch, Billericay, East Thurrock and Gravesend and Northfleet.

Loads of lads provado stories as you can imagine but two stories that stuck out where as follows.

1) I think the non-league player we are after and have got a bid in for is Charlie McDonald of Gravesend. He had a really good season again last year and a number of league one clubs are after him.

McDonald told my mate that he had two local League One sides after him. One of which was Gillingham and the other was us. He told Gravesend he wont be staying next season as he has league offers. I think you will find his contract is also up.

This week on Teletext Ronnie Jepson Gills Manager confirmed he was after McDonald but that a deal was unlikely as he had another club lined up so I have put two and two together.

2) Missing out on Whelpdale may not prove to be such a bad thing. He is supposed to be a bit of a drunk. This was brought to the attention when he along with Darren Blewitt (Ex West Ham and mad a few apperances for us) & Lee Hodges (Played on Loan of us) smashed up a KFC while drunk. All were arrested and had to pay E600 to be released pending investigations.

My mate knows this is correct as he was outside the station waiting for the three of them to be released.

Could all be bollocks but my mate told me about Freddy well before we got him and also told me about Coley as he is good mates with Mick Woodward.

Dont shoot the messenger.

did he say much about Mcdonald and if he thinks he will do the bizz for us if we sign him ???

Speed merchant with a great touch and a real eye for goal. He was bombed out at Charlton as a kid and had a bit of an attitude but that seems to have largely gone and he is keen to get back into the pro game.

I saw him at Crawley last season and I think he got one. Looked decent then.

A guy I work with was on the flight home with the Billericay boys - a tad worse for wear I understand!

Thank god for that! Well thats Fat Fry's problem now.

Some good information there Dave mate give yourself a pat on the back :D

I know a gravesend fan who raves about Mcdonald and said we should be looking at him few months ago, but i though he'd be a bit old considering he's 27-28

If he's good enough, he's good enough. His age isn't neccessarily an issue - wasn't David Crown was in his mid-20s when he started playing league football?

Mark Bentley was 26 when he signed for us.

However, a speed merchant in the conference is not necessarily that quick at L1 level.

i disagree - speed is speed.

..whether you have the skill level and touch to use that speed effectively is another matter....just look at cole(was just lacking slightly in the being a goood footballer, but his speed was outstanding)

Jesus everyone seems to be mates with every footballer's family or has a mate/brother/cousin/sister/uncle who is related to or knows every player who is going to sign for us.

Or Steven Clark, who could have been a great player, if he learned how to stop running

A great source of information, thanks DtS!

Why can't i have friends in high places :(

Infact why can't i have friends at all

I liked Steven Clark where did he end up in the end?

Ricey I think you and me may be from the same Sperm as Clarkey was a hero to me too.....Not as good as Forbsey of course....

I heard a rumor he now works in the Cornish Pasty Stall at London Bridge but when I brought my large Cornish at 11pm last night he was no where to be seen.

Dave

LOL! Just remember when he signed his first game he was electric and I thought we are on to a gem here. But he seemed to slip a little after his first season.

Oh well like you said No way near as much of a legend as Sir Scott Forbes.

Maybe we are long lost brothers?
