Have seen quite a few comments over the last few weeks comparing the job that Phil Brown is currently doing to the job and relative success that Paul Sturrock achieved in equally difficult circumstances. I was personally a fan of Sturrock, not his football per sae but as a man he always came across as a top bloke and somebody that always had time for the fans of the football club. Saying that though, I feel that we as a club are now heading in a much more promising direction, not only with the entertaining football we have played in the majority of games the season but also taking into account the strong characters that we are now producing in our team, Leonard, Prosser, Hurst, Bentley etc. These are players that are committed to the club and are all on long term contracts bar Prosser(surely must be offered a new one this summer). A main reason we were able to achieve the back to back promotions that we did under Tilson was by having players in our team such as Maher, Gower, Barrett, Flahavan...Players that were bedded into the team and knew the club inside out.
My point is I suppose, that Phil Brown is managing to do this with far less money than either Tilson or Sturrock were afforded. He has taken an out of favour left back (straker) and transformed him into a decent winger at this level (although he still often plays like an out of favour left back). We essentially have one winger (hurst) at our football club and we are somehow in a play off position. Instead of buying aging, experienced players, he has prioritised in signing up our youngsters to pro contracts and improving the players that were already at the club before him, Leonard being the prime example, also he has improved Prosser more than I ever thought was possible, when he first came to the club I couldn't wait for him to leave, he was slow, indecisive, and seemed incapable of passing the ball to a team mate. He is now without doubt our best centre back, surely in contention for player of the season and dare I say it a future captain if he carries on progressing at this rate. Brown hasn't had the finance to even go and spend on a flop like Benyon and has had to sign players that weren't exactly on most teams shortlist at the beginning of the season. White, Coker and Atkinson have all been top signings.
You always felt under Sturrock that even though we were lucky enough to have some exciting players, Hall, Ferdinand, Mohsni etc, these were players that were always on the lookout for a move and there was never the settled group that we seem to have atm.
My point is that even if we don't manage to get promoted this season, if this guy can carry on building the way he has done so far, then the next few years have all the makings of being successful ones for our football club!

If only Phil could improve on his overall 30% win ratio we would be ok.

Mr. Goat, well done on a well written No 5 post which, for me holds a lot of accurate points and summaries of past and present situations.
I want (very badly) for us to get out of this league and much of the squad is, IMO capable of doing a decent job higher up the league pyramid.
Up the leagues the refs, pitches, crowds, revenue etc ARE generally better and I believe we will see a better game as an entertaining spectacle.
Like you I enjoyed PS's management more than his football.
PB is doing ok/well and if we don't go up this year he has started laying foundations for a better next season.

Sturrocks budget was by far the highest but I'm guessing Brown's squad wage bill is still a fair bit higher than Tilsons in league 2 although Tilly didn't have a transfer embargo that season.

Phil brown and his back room staff have done a good job even with one hand tied behind him . His squad of 20 has played some lovely flowing football the likes we havent seen at the hall for some years . He cant be blamed for the slump because the state of the pitches ans the loss of important members of the team through injury isnt his fault . Some of his teams has not performed to there best but what could he do with a small squad . Hopefully he can motivate the team to finish in the playoffs .But if this does not happen he should remain in charge next term .And if we keep clean pay all the bills though out the summer start on a level playing field and bring in enough player for a good size squad say 25 players ..Then give it a dam good go next season

Not convinced on that one. Our older, slower and more injury prone players will be a year older, slower and more injury prone. The younger players, by and large, were here before he came.

He cant be blamed that the younger players jumped ship .The last manager and Ron martin should be held to account on that . They were not paid from one month to the next .And they were not offered contacts to stay . So what has phil brown done about that .He has offered the players he feels will push the club forwards long contracts to keep them .The likes of Bentley Lenny and Hurst .Plus he has brought on some of the youth that we have devoloped .Also the loan players are not that old ie apart from Barnard . So if that is keeping our old slower players Mick then I wish I was there old again .And who knows who he will release and bring in in the summer .

Whilst it's good to have the better younger players tied up on longish deals it also means Ron can sell them.

We don't care about Premier**** e results, your supposed to commentate on our game you arsehole!

Is a crucial time.
I feel we are going in the right direction with PB and would think it ludicrous to make a change at the moment.
Having said that, PB will know how frustrating this slump is and he will know he needs to somehow shake performances and results up to keep supporters onside over the next few weeks.

When Brown joined we were 9th in The League. A year on and we're hanging on to 7th. Not much change.

Is PB a stubborn man? he keeps on about 4 3 3; he keeps on with trying to have us play with two wingers which he calls forwards and some of his subs selections are hard to understand.
He can now state that he has listened and tried Fred, Laird and CC and it didn't work out: although players & system are not the same thing but are related to our current issues.
My points are all centred on the same thing; he (PB) doesn't seem to know what or who ought to be starting and how/what system they are playing. Or alternatively he does and is a very poor communicator as his shouts from the bye line yesterday were very regular and basic, which players ought to have known from training and briefing.

MK we might be 2 places higher but if we don't win soon that will be the highest we will get and a mid-table finish if this run continues.

Oh agreed Kenneth. It's quite remarkable that we're not already midtable after this dismal run.

We're 20th in the "form" table. Fortunately the team just above us and one of the chasing pack are even lower.

Newport have just scored ...... an own goal !
