Really don't think this is a very good song for the "terraces". Might be alright for the kids, but think it lacks a certain something to become an Anthem.

Madness - One Step Beyond on the other hand.

I'm thinking of starting a campaign to get Sweet Caroline made the club's anthem.

In the past I've always said we should choose Daydream Believer because it meets my criteria:

  • We should choose a song that is old so that it has already gone passed the naff phase a modern song would have to go through.
  • An older song gives the impression that it has been used for years!
  • A song like that is one that nearly everyone will join in with.
Your criteria is good, but I think a couple of extra 'desirable, but not essential' criteria need to be added..
  • The song has a link (even if weak) to Southend/Essex, or football in general
  • The song can be used to celebrate when the team is winning, but also to motivate when the team is struggling.

The second point would mean it'd be difficult to choose any 'bouncy' upbeat tracks. I previously suggested "Only You" by Yazoo (giving the local connection Moyet/Clarke) & with a chorus easy for all to get behind.

My other suggestion was "Keeping the Dream Alive" by Münchener Freiheit which, although not linked to Southend, is one of the best songs that can be used as an anthem! It was used one season by Wolves, in a promotions campaign few years ago, but as far as I know, no-one else uses it.

I like the Freiheit suggestion but how about a segue into Live is Life followed by 99 Red Balloons by Neneh?

I saw a club full of moustachioed Germans go mental for this on holiday in the Med.

Like the idea, but not the Neil Diamond suggestion. It would have to be something unique to us or there's no point.

Daydream believer is used and corrupted by the Northampton fans to have a go at Peterborough and Barry Fry so that's no good.
How about simply the best by Tina Turner?

I have always suggested Story of the Blues by the Mighty Wah when this topic crops up, although I would make do with the song written about Southend , by a Southend Fan , Blue by Alison Moyet (being the theme tune for a TV programme makes a bit more well known too)

dont really like the song, would love this, its less obvious and sorta makes sense

They have Sweet Caroline at Boston Red Sox games, I know it's Baseball but the crowd join in and it makes for a good atmosphere. I may be sad and getting on a bit but I am going to the O2 next month to see Neil Diamond in concert.

I have to say I've seen him three times. (Did you know he's been touring with the same band for about 40 years?) I would have gone to this concert but my wife can't listen to him any longer. He was one of her father's favourites, and since he died she hasn't been able to listen to him without bursting into tears.

Story of the Blues is perfect.

Whilst Blue by Alison Moyet a song about Southend United written and sung by a Southend Supporter would be ideal, its a terrible song. (Sorry Alison).
