Latest rumour mill suggests Fletcher Moss Rangers have asked for a £2m donation from Manchester United to upgrade their facilities and safeguard their future. FMR were the community club responsible for the early development of Rashford, Blackett, Borthwick-Jackson and Welbeck. They've denied they've requested the donation.

Surely it's the least Man United could do for a club that have contributed massively to their academy. Surely they should do it even if it's for their own personal gain with regards to future youth prospects?

Hate seeing grassroots suffer whilst the rich get richer.

2 million pounds is a lot of money for even man Utd, I'm sure they will get something back eh.

Well done FMR, but taking the example of Rashford, he left them aged eight. The reason he is now talented enough to play for Man Utd is down to Man Utd, not FMR.

£2m is nothing to Man Utd (try telling that to the Glazers!) but it would be a lot if they gave £2m to every school who sent a talented youngster their way who eventually ended up in the first team squad

Also, there were direct quotes from the club secretary in The Times yesterday - the backtracking seems curious

I think it'd be a great idea for clubs like United to fund the likes of Fletcher Moss Rangers, that have a reputation for finding players and make them a 'feeder' club.

It'd cast the net that bit further and would cost peanuts...

£2 million? Never heard of that club but not sure they need that much to upgrade facilities and safeguard their future. More like their owner/chairman wanting to line his pockets!

From The Times:

"In all, Jamieson wants £2 million to replace the old pavilion with a new one that contains six changing rooms and a communal room, which could provide the club with extra revenue through renting it out for other functions. The money would also be spent on state-of-the-art 3G pitches and floodlights."

Six changing rooms indeed...

£2 million for a pavilion of six changing rooms, 3G pitches and floodlights? A club round here did a scheme not too dissimilar to that, albeit on a slightly smaller scale, for around £800k.

Anyway, sounds like FMR are trying to leverage the state of play in Manchester youth development circles at the moment. Haven't read the stories in too much detail, but I presume this funding would come in exchange of giving United first refusal on any players they have coming through? City have moved into United's usual breeding grounds in a very big way and have cemented themselves as the best side in the area. I think United have even stopped playing City are certain age groups because of the absolute hidings they've been getting.
