What a great 3 points towards safety and not conceding any goals again. It sounds like we played very very well today, a great team performance all around. It makes up for that drubbing earlier this season...

We have picked up 19 points since SCP took over.:loyalsupporter:

Match report: Southend United 2, Rotherham United 0

SOUTHEND United ended a run of three successive draws with a 2-0 win against Rotherham United at Roots Hall.

Good performance against a poor team, surprisingly. Dominated the first half and deserved to be 2 or 3 clear, second half was much more even but a well taken second goal put it to bed. We never looked particularly troubled and caused them problems.

Oxley 7 Couple of good saves.
Bwomono 5 Showed his inexperience, too many touches, panicked a few times, caught out of position.
White 7 Rock solid, won everything in the air, great to have him back.
Turner 7 As above.
Coker 6 A few sloppy passes and clearances, it's been some time since we really saw him at his best.
McLaughlin 6 Take out his goal (which was a great finish after a woeful touch) and he had a really poor game. Just an off day but nothing came off.
Yearwood 7 Did well and you'd never guess his age.
Mantom 7 Started well and looked positive, though he did tire later on. Not outstanding but not at all bad either.
Wordsworth 6 Moments of brilliance but generally did his job without standing out.
Fortune 6 Frustrating afternoon but ran around and chased a lot.
Cox 9 Superb, never gave up on any ball, first goal was all his work and second as well.

Subs
Timlin 7 Exactly what was needed and didn't give them a moment's peace.
Harrison 6 Chasing long balls.
Wright - Couple of minutes

Overall , a mixed game. Classy play in the first half with some lively overlaps and passing , we looked dangerous in the beginning and showed it with the first goal, Cox breaking forward and sliding it to the right to McLaughlin who slotted it home nicely in the 7th minute. Bit shakey and scrappy towards the end of the second half. After the break , the ball spent 3/4 of the time in the air or placed down for fouls , wasn't great to watch and was a bit scary , but we kept on going with our terrible pitch and increasing Rotherham pressure. Cox gets his goal near the end of the match out of nowhere , chasing after an absolute punt by Oxley , defender tried to shield it out , nicked , ran into the middle and great goal to seal it.

Oxley - 9 - Faultless , excellent double save towards the end and did well in a scary goalmouth scramble, would be 10 if had more to do in the 1st half

Elvis - 7 - Did well today for a young player , inexperience showed on occasions, couple of dodgy clearances , but did well to stand in for Demi.

White - 9 - Absolutely solid performance today , dealt well with constantly being pulled down, good tackles and clearances

Turner - 7 - Won virtually every ball in the air , although a few of them were dangerously misplaced , did well to last the full 90, another fairly solid performance

Coker - 8.5 - Very good in attack and defence , 100% commited and ran his heart out up and down the left wing , a typical fantastic performance from Ben

Wordsworth - 6.5 - Did well in the first half, could obviously see the whole 'playing for the contract' , played some good balls and also broke up their play on a few occasions , really faded towards the end and barely touched the ball in the second half

Yearwood - 8 - Was very very impressed by Dru, very close to scoring a long range sidefoot , tipped over the bar. Kept misjudging the bounce from their clearances , but I'm sure that'll come with experience. Ran for miles

Mantom - 7.5 - I was personally impressed at how well he broke up the play , and seemed to be popping up putting pressure on them all over the midfield, however slightly negative on occasion , backwards runs and passes , but nothing too bad.

McLaughlin - 7 - Well placed finish for the goal after the across pitch pass from Cox , tried very hard , but again one of those who faded out towards the end.

Fortune - 6.5 - Very classy in the first half and seemed to want to put the effort in and ran all over the place. Typically ran out of steam around the 60th minute , and ended up being a bit of a waste of space towards the end , a few offsides and not really being in the game.

Cox - 10 - Absolutely superb , one of the hardest working performances I've seen from him , great assist , and great goal at the end , stealing it off the defender trying to shepherd the ball out of okay and calmly slotting it home , sealing the game and relieving a lot of pressure. Class

Subs-

Timlin - 6.5 - Did well to bring a bit of presence back into the midfield after we seemed to not be able to keep the ball , did what was needed.

Harrison - not really enough time to rate , ran about a bit and that's it really

Wright - only had 2 mins so meh.

Referee - He was okay , not brilliant , seemed to give all the pushes and shoves in Rotherham's direction , but nothing too criminal, probably kept stopping the game because he was one of the more portly refs and couldn't keep up.

7 points behind the playoffs , who knows eh ? ;)[VINE][VINE][/VINE][/VINE]

Now that really is unfair. We weren't even playing Rochdale and they got the decisions

Great and solid performance. The stand out display by far was Turner at the back. Rotherham had a big threat up front in Smith. Apart from a couple of mis-placed passes Turner had his best performance of the season.

I thought Dawson had a great game

iFollow is no substitute for not being there but it’s better than nothing at all. The first half was all Southend and you had to wonder how Rotherham are where they are in the league. Today we were treated to a ‘Chrissy Powell quick start’ where we torn into them before they had settled. A ball out on the left to Coxy who controlled it and released a perfect cross field ball to McLaughlin who in turn obliged with a low finish to the left hand corner of the Rotherham goal, 1-0. Wordsworth once again put in a really good shift and his interchanging with Coker on the left was a master class in close control. Fortune continues to amaze me with his enthusiasm, stamina and close control skills. He may not get another year as first choice, but he has been a joy to watch for me over the last two seasons. Mantom, in his first full start, looked very comfortable on the ball and with a bit more playing time will be a fine loan player. We continued to batter them for the rest of the first half, but just couldn’t manage to convert our superiority into goals. So, half time and up 1-0.

The second half was the complete opposite of the first, and to me it looked like an end of season game where neither side had the gumption to open the other up. True there were moments of excitement, but until the magic Cox moment it was pretty ugly from both sides. To be fair Rotherham did start to put us under the cosh a bit, but the back 4 and the mids defended very well. First Turner and Ferdinand have previously created a tough pairing, and now John White has cemented his place next to Turner, nothing got past them or Oxley today. I want to add a special mention for Elvis. He was understandably nervous and made some simple errors but he also showed composure and tenaciousness which bodes very well for the future. And now to the bit that made my afternoon, a long ball out from Oxley collected by Coxy out on the left. He turned and dribbled into the Rotherham box and let go his shot and the ball was in the back of the net. One of the bonuses of TV is seeing the players faces close up, and the look on Coxy’s face of disbelief followed by elation was a joy to behold. It also made up for the pile driver of a shot he had earlier in the half which their keeper somehow got to. Anyway three points today and 50 on the board now, Time to relax a bit maybe now and experiment ready for next time round.

My MoM today was Woody again. He looked everything I hope he will be every game he starts. Definitely worth another contract.

The Rotherham number 5 is never a footballer. He can head a ball but has zero ability with the ball at his feet. Mistake after mistake in the first half from him and Cox mugged him off for our second goal

Wow didn't expect that and a clean sheet, 6 points from Friday and Monday's game then who knows wat could happen, good size crowd today also:thumbsup:

One of the worst individual performances I've seen from someone at Roots Hall. Everything he touched ended up giving us the ball back or out of the ground.

Think you're being a bit harsh on Elvis. With that formation he doesn't have someone in front of him and therefore has to concentrate solely on defender and I thought he did that very well today - hardly anything came down the right.

Coker seems to be the one struggling at the moment
