Southend United Ladies

Finished 17-0 but a very valiant effort from the Ladies with a centre half in goal...

Did I just hear correctly that we have a centre back playing in goal today?! She’s been our best player by a country mile, so impressive if true!

They’ve done well to get this far. I don’t know for certain but im assuming a gap of 3 divisions in Ladies football is bigger than a gap of 3 divisions in Men’s football?
Yep Claudia is a defender but has stepped in goal when needed. Always quick off the line, 110% committed and is very vocal.

Some idiots on the you tube feed mugging the girls off but as you say, the gulf between the 2 teams is huge

I'm very proud of the girls today, they have done so well to even get the 1st round proper

just watched the first twenty minutes or so - Hashtag much stronger physically and much more pace. Men v boys or something like that

They are 3 tiers higher and haven't lost all season so it was expected
Expected to see you there Phil?

It was always gonna be a tough game with a high score against them.

They done well to reach this stage so nothing should be taken away from them and should walk away proud of what they have managed so far.
Thought the keeper had a blinder today and considering she doesn’t normally play there done exceptionally well (the normal keeper had a hand injury).
They can only build on this

If nothing else it has raised their profile and put some coffers into their funds

I had a previous commitment but managed to catch the second half live on you tube. Claudia did a great job in goal and the score could have been far higher but for some great saves.

I don't head onto Shrimperzone much these days. Hope you don't mind me posting.

I covered the match for Yellow Sport, from a Southend perspective, hoping to help April promote the team.

They did remarkably well to reach this stage of the competition. As Tinks said, I hope it will help raise the profile of the club and help them develop.

BTW, Blues goalkeeper, Claudia Zajac was absolutely fantastic. Both sides agreed she was the Player of the match. Some of the saves she made were incredible - Jeevesie

Ladies game is today cancelled due to a player in the other team testing positive and hence all of them are now having to test.

@Tinks or anybody else who can answer this….
Why is it that in womens football the standard of goalkeeper seems well below the rest of the positions? Is it a physicality thing? I’m only going by what I have seen on tv.

I don't know - but I wonder if it could be down to training. I suspect budgets are low / non existent for the specialist training required, especially when the players are younger.

As money comes into the game and players are identified by the 'big' clubs at younger ages it should improve.

It could be a physical thing and amount to general strength
Most men are taller than women for starters and size is important in goalkeeping

Yeah possibly, don’t want to sound disparaging because some of the football played has really impressed me.

Should they have slightly smaller goals maybe? Given hight differences. Then again I’m sure there is enough tall women who can fit the bill

I'm not sure there are, according to the girl's height chart only 0.4% of 18 year old girls are taller than 5 foot 11 (Darryl Flahaven's height, and he was very small for a keeper), for men it's 25%. Most of that 0.4% probably have no interest in being a professional keeper too (especially with the pay being pretty low unless you're lucky enough to play with one of the handful of clubs that pay well).

Didn't the Chelsea Ladies manager suggest a few seasons ago that they should play on slightly smaller pitches with smaller goals, as they are not as genetically strong as men ? Of course both sexes should be equal in attitudes, but I can understand her viewpoint. Problem is the logistics at the lower levels, I suppose. Having to provide specific sized pitches, as well as 5-a-side, 7-a-side and 9-a-side pitches for youngsters.

Well the size of the goals haven't changed since the rules were instigated. I would imagine that back in the late 19th century the majority of men were smaller than they are now.

People are getting taller and stronger due to better nutrition, When I was 16 I was 194cms and I was considered tall. Now when I walk around I see all these teenagers tower above me.

So there should be no change in the size of any pitch or goals, the ladies will just have to adapt.
