Essex Cricket 2022

Essex have signed Rossington on loan from Northants. He was their skipper until about a week ago when there were some strangely vague announcements about his position.

Essex sign Rossington on loan for the season.

Weird one this. I’m not sure where he fits and a season long loan is unusual. I suspect it’s more of a signing for the white ball stuff - maybe the replacement for Delport at the top of the order?

I’m not sure if this means him or Wheater give up the gloves and plays as a specialist bat.

I suppose it’s a good thing to add talent but as with Critchley I think he’s quite a division 2 player and not sure if he’ll cope with the step up to 1st division cricket but maybe it’ll be the making of him?

He wanted an improved contract but Northants weren't playing ball then they stripped him of captaincy because he didn't sign and he fell out with the head coach. Northants have had a nightmare and handled it badly, they have even had to sign a month loan for a Hampshire back up keeper. I think it's a decent signing for us, experienced wk/batsman. I've no doubt Rossington and Wheater will both play and we have a solid batsman to fill the RTD hole. It's just a shame we don't have Harmer the full season otherwise I think we'd be even stronger than the last championship win.

I be going to the game on Friday the weather looks cold but dry at the moment.Should be an exciting season

Think it will be important for Essex to start well this season.

It’s a team that may have already peaked (and what a glorious peak it was) and if they find themselves out of the running they may find motivation hard to come by, particularly if the likes of Lawrence and Sam Cook are unavailable for large portions of the season. Harmer has been such a weapon but I’m not sure how much he’ll be available now South Africa have remembered he’s one of theirs.

Browne 31
Cook 37
Westley 33
Lawrence 24
Critchley 25
Rossington 29 in a few weeks
Wheater 32
Snater 26
Stekete 28
Cook 24
Porter 29 next month

(Harmer 33)

Or maybe someone like Rymell, Allinson, Beard or Jamal Richards will step up?

great start, especially given the windy conditions. I'm in the Chelmsford office to day so gonna head up after work for my 1st game as a member haha

Have I missed something with little chef? Why would he be out? Is he in the lions or something?

Injury is probably the most likely reason but he could be drinks carrying for England (they picked Fisher and Overton over the winter) or playing for the Lions or maybe even a late pick-up to play for a franchise (IPL, CPL etc to try and push his international credentials). Basically it’s hard to guarantee availability these days.

I must have drifted onto a coma at some point and missed the Simon Harmer and South Africa recall bombshell.

Big miss.

Close

Essex are 272 for 4

They were 220-0 until the opening partnership of Browne 107 and Cook 100 were both succumbed to Bird.

I went down after work. I get the feeling that Cook and browne did brilliantly agsinst the 1st new ball, when the 2nd one came things changed. Very positive for us as I don't think we will waste the 1st new ball. I got to see both Browne and Chef complete their centuries, not bad for my 1st visit as a member. Westley looked in very good touch this evening, hopefully he can get a score. I was worried the pitch might be dead but I really do think the openers played a blinder, the wind was ridiculous as well! Floodlights wobbling and the roof of the marquee was ripping off. A very positive day for Essex

Very encouraging this. Our lower order looks a lot stronger
