Maher: “The players have trained Properly”

Kevin Maher wants his team to build on a positive week of training and return to winning ways when Altrincham come to Essex tomorrow.

Blues’ 11-game unbeaten run came to an end with defeats to Gateshead and Aldershot, and Maher’s men return to Roots Hall after three weeks away for the first of four home games in December.

Following another week with no midweek fixture, Maher was pleased with how his team trained ahead of the visit of the Robins.

He explained: “So much good work has gone in. The players are disappointed because we hate losing and it’s not something we’ve been used to recently.

“You lose a bit of confidence when you lose games, so it’s important to train properly, which they’ve done this week. We’re looking to get a performance first and foremost and hopefully then the result will come.

“It’s been nice to have a full week of training. We got some good work in so we’ll be prepared for Altrincham. The things that I can control are within the training ground.

“We’ve got to focus on football and this is a good environment for the players to work in. They’re brilliant in terms of how they are every day and they’re always willing to improve.

“It’s been disappointing to lose the last two, but we’re still fifth in the league so we know a lot of positives have gone on recently with how we’re playing. We’re looking to get back on track.”

There were more than 700 Shrimpers supporters at both the Gateshead International Stadium and the EBB Stadium, and Maher said the fans’ support will once again be important in getting the most out of the players.

“We’re strong at home, and with our crowd behind us, we’ll always look to take the game to the opposition.

“The disappointing thing is that we took so many fans to both Gateshead and Aldershot and we didn’t give them anything to cheer.

“It wasn’t for a lack of trying from the players and hopefully we’ll put that right in front of a good crowd on Saturday.”

Altrincham, who went full-time in the summer, have recovered from a difficult start to the season to sit eight points above the relegation zone as the campaign approaches its halfway point.

On Phil Parkinson’s men, Maher said: “Altrincham have a way of playing which hasn’t changed too much.

“They’ve got some real dangerous players in attacking areas and they’re in good form, so it’ll be a tough game. We’ve got to put our imprint on it and dictate the tempo of it.”

Tickets for Saturday’s game, which kicks off at 12:30pm, are available

Assessing his options – Southend United boss Kevin Maher

Southend United are again expected to be missing four strikers for Saturday’s clash with Altrincham.

Rhys Murphy remains sidelined with an ankle injury.

And Blues boss Kevin Maher is also likely to be without Jake Hyde (hamstring), Callum Powell (knee) and Harry Cardwell.

“We are what we are,” said Maher.

“Hydey won’t be fit and Powelly is struggling to make the weekend too.

“Cards is still on his return to play after the injection so it looks like we are what we are.

“But we’re strong and at home with the crowd right behind us we’ll always look to take the game to the opposition. “

Goalkeeper Steve Arnold is still out with a hip problem while midfielder Noor Husin remains doubtful with a groin problem which has seen him miss the last three games.

“Noor has been out on the grass with the physio and Stef (Russo) doing some work,” said Maher.

“He’s stepped that up the last few days but it’s very doubtful he will be fit for Saturday.”

Goalkeeper Blondy Nna Noukeu is pushing for a recall as Blues bid to bounce back from two defeats in succession.

Big Preview

Southend United v Altrincham

Big Preview.jpg

Overview

Altrincham are the visitors to Roots Hall as Blues kick off a busy period of home matches, with four to come in December.

FC Halifax Town make the trip south next Tuesday, before the Shrimpers welcome Boreham Wood in the FA Trophy and take on Bromley on Boxing Day to round off the year.

It’s the Robins who Kevin Maher’s men come up against tomorrow, with Southend looking to return to the form that saw them go 11 league games unbeaten and storm up the table.

Despite two recent defeats, Blues remain in fifth, the position they rose to following the 2-0 win against Dorking last time out at Roots Hall.

Tomorrow’s game provides a chance to solidify that play-off berth, with every team below Southend down to Eastleigh in 12th having at least one game in hand on the Shrimpers.

The game kicks off at 12:30. This was changed due to a potential clash with an England or Wales World Cup round-of-16 clash.

The opposition

Altrincham have kicked on after making the switch to full-time in the summer, recovering from a run of nine winless matches at the start of the season.

Five of those were draws so it wasn’t an entirely disastrous opening, and they then won three out of four to move away from the bottom. They are now three unbeaten, beating York and Eastleigh recently to move to within just three points of the top half.

Having finished 17th and 14th in the last two seasons, the Robins are continuing to establish themselves in the fifth tier after two promotions in three seasons to get back to this level.

With their new full-time status, the Greater Manchester club have been able to build a squad that’s perhaps better than they’ve had in recent years.

Among it is accomplished goalscorer Ryan Colclough, Crewe academy graduate Josh Lundstram and Welsh defender James Jones.

They also have two relatively big-name loanees from last season’s National League champions Stockport, Elliot Newby and Connor Jennings.

Previous meetings

The only two games between the two clubs came last season, the first campaign in which they were in the same division having had significantly different histories.

Blues picked up a crucial win at Moss Lane in the early stages of their resurgence under Kevin Maher. The goalscorers were Rhys Murphy and Sam Dalby in a 2-1 victory.

In Essex, it was another Southend win, this one by two goals to nil. Nathan Ralph and Matt Dennis were the players to find the net.

From the boss

“You lose a bit of confidence when you lose games, so it’s important to train properly, which they’ve done this week,” said Maher in his Thursday press conference.

“We’re looking to get a performance first and foremost and hopefully then the result will come.

“It’s been nice to have a full week of training. We got some good work in so we’ll be prepared for Altrincham.

“Altrincham have a way of playing which hasn’t changed too much.

“They’ve got some real dangerous players in attacking areas and they’re in good form, so it’ll be a tough game. We’ve got to put our imprint on it and dictate the tempo of it.”

Blues team news

Kevin Maher will have something of a selection headache in attacking areas again, with Jake Hyde, Rhys Murphy and Harry Cardwell all definitely out.

Callum Powell is unlikely to be ready, while in midfield, Noor Husin is in a similar boat. He’s working towards a return but this game is likely to come too soon for the Afghanistan international.

Ref watch

Scott Simpson is the man in charge, as he takes charge of his 36th National League fixture.

Last season he was in the middle for Blues’ 5-0 defeat at Edgeley Park against Stockport County, and he has refereed three fifth-tier games so far this campaign, showing just two yellow cards.

His assistants are Eugene Robinson and Christopher Myatt, and the fourth official is Graham Swanton.

Tickets

Tickets can be purchased online here, in person at the ticket office or by calling 0344 477 0077.

Tickets cost £18 for adults, £13 for concessions, £8 for juniors (9-16) and £3 for a child (8 and under) if bought in advance of matchday. Prices increase by £2 on matchday.

Elsewhere in the National League

It’s a full schedule of a dozen National League fixtures on Saturday as Scunthorpe United’s first game after a takeover at the club was agreed sees them host high-flying Notts County.

Elsewhere, Chesterfield travel to FC Halifax Town, Barnet play Wealdstone in a local derby and Bromley look to move into the play-offs when they host Yeovil Town.

All 12 games kick-off at 12:30, with York City against Wrexham live on BT Sport. It’s the Minstermen’s first game under new manager David Webb.

Dagenham & Redbridge v Torquay United

Come On You Blues!

Three changes for the Blues

Blondy Nna Noukeu starts between the sticks, Colin Andeng Ndi pulled hamstring in training on Thursday
Wreh starts in attack
Taylor partners Miley in midfield

My mate sent me this earlier today, wasn’t sure if it was Collin or not but he is on crutches.

Anyone know much about Blondy? Looks like he was once called up to the Cameroon squad. Doesn’t look like he’s had much league experience though.

Unlike Colin the defence won't have much confidence playing the ball back!
Although Colin can take this to the extreme he is comfortable with it..
That is my worry!
