Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 0-1 Bromley

Is there update on Steveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee's injury / recovery / match fitness ?

We need him back as he inspires confidence in the defence - and they in him

LastI I heard (very recent) was that in around a month or so its hoped he can maybe start to get back on the pitch and maybe in a couple of months look at playing, but lots of ifs and buts and improvement needed.

Thanks ITK - have you heard anything about Colin? Do you know if he’s likely to be back before or after Arnold?

Absolute garbage. Uninspired, impotent, insipid. Just not at the races. Not energetic enough, and our usually exemplary press was all over the place.

Losing GSM seemed to unsettle, although a biiiiig mistake was made trying Bridge at RWB in his place. Bridge's game is playing as an inverted LWB and cutting in onto his right foot, so playing on the right just blunts him. Lo and behold, he suddenly started causing problems when he was shifted to the left.

Not too sure what Husin did to deserve a start today and thought he did the square root of nothing. Would rather have had Taylor in there, we might have been a bit steelier in the middle.

Blondy Nna Noukeu is just not good enough.

We let Bromley do a number on us. They're a pub team but they're big and strong, and they're master ****houses. Can't sit off teams like that and certainly can't let them take the lead with soft goals because you know what they'll do. Infuriating to drop points at home in what was a very, very winnable game, especially when we know that we are so, so much better than that.
This pretty much sums up my feelings, good post. I’d add Wreh to Husin in the ‘doing the square root of nothing’ club (Fonguck’s not far away from joining too!), neither should start the next game imo. Powell for Wreh’s an obvious change, I’m not sure we’ve got great options to change the midfield though. Some rockets up a few arses might help, we had too many coasting their way through the game yesterday.

I never thought Blondy was the good but he pulled off some vital saves. Could easily have been 3 or 4 without the saves he made. The one in the first half I thought was a nailed on goal but he somehow clawed it out from the top corner

Maher needs to stop wedging in players when things were fine and he needs to select better and put them in their best position.
The irony here is that you will be talking about the wing-back position and if you go back a year or so you’ll find the exact same complaints about Bridge playing out of position at wing-back and how it doesn’t make sense when there’s a natural wing-back in Ralph who should be playing there instead.

FWIW I think an underestimated reason Bridge is less effective on the right is that he doesn’t have Wes on that side. Having him as a runner makes Bridge so much more effective as he can either run at the defender or draw in the defence and release Wes into space.

I’d expect Bridge to revert to the left on NYD and Harry Taylor to come in as RWB. Powell should come in for Wreh as we lack pace. It’s then a choice of Ralph or Kensdale for the LCB spot.

I would however consider Harry Taylor for Noor in midfield to give us more control there but I don’t know what’s happened to Jaden Crowhurst who’d be my choice at RWB.

Really? Before he got injured when we first signed him he looked decent and looked like the striker we have been after! He was unlucky with the header but should have scored! He's pacey and gets in good positions, just give him time as he's been pretty much injured for the time he's been at the club.

I think the main attribute that Collin has over Blondy is decisiveness. He seems quick to decide what he is going to do and he does it. Occasionally it is the wrong choice or it doesn't come off but at least the defence seems to know that he is going to do something.

It worries me a bit, the communication between Blondy and the defenders, especially Lopata, there were a couple of mix ups yesterday but luckily no repeat of the howler before. Extra work on the training ground needed, perhaps ..

Colin has much better footwork and better with the ball at his feet then bloody! Body looks like a decent shot stopper but so is colin.! Colin gets the nod over blondy but Arnold is the main man

It was an awful game..thought they were better in every position and still not keen on blondy... powell was a bright spark in a dull game ... unlucky with the header of crossbar..it was freezing in the second half and nothing on the pitch was warming... still in the play-offs..how! just shows the quality below the top 3.. Awful..but still we know we can pull a result out of the bag and we will proberbly win the re-match.. up the blues!

They’re both in the gym today, which is encouraging

Great shout YB, Crowhurst is a good choice but I had a feeling he was out on loan?

He’s been back 2 months AFAIA. Jack Wood is now at Tonbridge, which is where he was.

I suppose he’s probably short of match fitness at this point. The cold snap/cost of petrol has meant the B team haven’t had many games for a while.
