BRENTWOOD Town dangerman Danny Ogunleye will have Chris Barker in his thoughts when he faces Southend United on Saturday.
Ogunleye, who has scored 17 goals already this season, was in the Forest Green Rovers youth team coached by Barker prior to his death in January 2020.
And Ogunleye remains keen to do the ex Shrimpers skipper proud.
“He meant a lot to me,” said Ogunleye, who played in a match to remember Barker at Roots Hall in May 2022.
“He helped me so much with my development in my younger years when I was at Forest Green.
“He really helped me become the player that I am.
“He gave me so much support and helped me adapt to the more physical side of the game.
“I’m very happy he was in my life and hopefully I can do well for him.
“I still think about him all the time and I definitely will this weekend as it’s Southend we’re playing.”
Ogunleye, who can play anywhere across the front three, has continually caught the eye for Brentwood this season.
And he cannot wait for tomorrow’s FA Trophy tie with the Shrimpers.
“We’re really looking forward to it and there’s going to be a big crowd for us,” said Ogunleye.
“The atmosphere is going to be great and I’m sure all the boys will be ready for it.
“It’s exciting and something we welcome.
“It was a similar atmosphere against Hereford in the last round and we dealt with it quite well.
“We got the job done and we’ve dealt with any challenge coming our way so hopefully we will against Southend too.
“It’s going to be a very very good game.”
Brentwood head into the game sitting seventh in the Isthmian North standings and were boosted by a 3-1 win at Heybridge Swifts on Tuesday night.
Ogunleye scored twice late on in the victory and is pleased with how his season is shaping up.
“I’m very happy with my form at the moment,” said Ogunleye.
“I set myself a target in terms of goals and I’m on my way to reaching it.
“Helping the team get points is the main thing and then hopefully we can push for promotion to get out of the league.”
Brentwood are currently two points and two positions below the play-offs.
And Ogunleye is confident of kicking on.
“We’re doing quite well but we’ve lost a few games I don’t think we should’ve lost,” said Ogunleye who first joined Brentwood three years ago.
“We’ve bounced back from it and we’re in good form.
“We’re just outside the play-offs right now and we want promotion.
“We can definitely get play-offs, if not more.”
But, longer term, Ogunleye has his own ambitions to achieve.
I want to push on and get back into the pro game,” said the 22-year-old.
“That’s my aim.”
