Post-Match Thread and Ratings Oldham FC 3-2 Southend Utd

Im not going to criticise anyone as they gave it everything & it’s a kick in the teeth to lose like that. But sadly we threw it away. We got too complacent as the second period of extra time went on as we were so comfortable, gave the ball away cheaply for their equalizer, and the winner, well what can you say. Total fluke. So we go again next season. Safe journey home everyone.

Gutted but they have exceeded expectations and I am very proud of the team.

It will be a more difficult league next season with two big clubs promoted into this division as well as Carlisle. But we lose Oldham so we should be ok for another crack at the playoffs. We go again and hopefully next season we get out of this non league division

Our chance was the one we had at 2-1. He did everything bar score. For 80 minutes we were second best. After that at 2-1 up I thought we'd hold it. Wasn't to be. A couple of players short of their A game today. Disappointed but not disillusioned. Just to be here this season was beyond my wildest dreams 2 months back.

One or two fan favourites let the team down today.

One particular fan favourite put less effort into his actual position today then the majority of us put in getting to the ground.

I know given where we were 12 months ago, even being in it at extra time is amazing.

But make no mistake, we lost that game more than Oldham won it.

I genuinely fear we might end up being stuck here for a decade.

Disappointed, but not surprised.

Not good enough.

It's tough to lose that way, but at least we got into Wembley. Next season we need to hit the ground running and finish top. Neither Morecambe nor Carlisle are as good as Barnet and Oldham so that will help (although Morecambe always beat us of course). Scunthorpe coming up could be tricky and York and Forest Green will both be strong again.

So it won't be easy, and we have to get over today - being just 10 minutes away from victory is cruel. But if I'm being totally honest I think a draw would have been a fair result and we would then face the lottery of penalties.

Good luck to Oldham and I hope we can follow in their wake next season.

This one really hurts. Probably too early to analyse what happened without being unreasonable, so forgive the analysis below.

Hayes cannot be first choice keeper next season. Were the goals his fault? No, but he gets nowhere near anything and can’t kick.

GSM was not at the races at all today… genuinely questioned if the whack to his head last week had some effect, as I’ve never seen him over hit and miss pass as much as today.

Goodliffe was unfortunate with the goal, but also had a golden chance near the end that he air kicked.

We’re 4-5 players away from being able to challenge consistently next season, and I’m not hopeful that we’ll be able to do that given so many are still contracted.

Now in what looks like multiple hours of queuing to get away… 15 minutes away from not being in this league anymore - absolutely gutted.

An absolutely fantastic game of football by two traditional football team.

Congratulations to Oldham - considering we didn't even look like starting the season it's a fantastic performance in the playoffs.

Hopefully we'll be back next season - much stronger because we're now on a sure financial footing - and play Oldham again in L2.

Only complaint was the refereeing which was absolutely abysmal - Oldham were constantly fouling yet it was play on. I wouldn't mind but he was blowing against us for similar fouls.

Gutted about the goal - till that point Oldham were just resorting to hoofball and Goodliffe got completely out - just really shouldn't happen. The third looked like an own goal to me - but had to be intercepted because their player was completely unmarked in the middle.

I am absolutely gutted and numb after that. Lads gave it everything, I have to be honest I didn’t expect us to make it past Rochdale and then didn’t expect it against FGR, super proud of the boys getting to the final, just so gutted with their equaliser and winner! We were so close, but just wasn’t to be. Hard to sum it up, but at the moment that is the best I can do. This will hurt for a while of that I am sure, but it’s how we Chanel that disappoint at the start of next season.
