SUFC: The Future Next season

Exactly. And again my concern. If expectations like this are set without the commensurate budget many supporters will very much remember the expectation but obstinately and repeatedly overlook the fact that we still couldn’t compete with at least 3 or 4 teams financially, and one of them again will go up automatically. We are more than capable further to this of having a Kev out thread whilst 4th in the table because somehow that’s failing…

Of course, we may very much be looking to up the budget materially. Even so external expectation setting around the target being the playoffs as a minimum would just work a little better IMHO…

However let’s see how the recruiting goes over the next 3 weeks
Yep. On the whole our fans have understood the situation of the last few years and allowed for that.

Next season however the honeymoon period is over, it will be an entirely different story. If we aren't right in amongst the top 7 (at the very least) then the crowds will show their feelings vocally and with their feet.

Big, big, summer coming up for COSU this. They have to back Kev financially in producing a side capable of challenging York, FGR, Carlisle, Dale etc, or there will be calls for heads by Christmas.

You would be correct. It may come as a surprise to many on this board but most of the COSU members feel the same way as I do about last season - nice playoff run, regular season hugely disappointing. Maher isn't going anywhere, but he will be told that more is required.
How do they feel about providing a budget commensurate with their expectations?

If it doesn’t change then last years budget was commensurate with achieving the playoffs which we achieved. From Xmas once the nonsense from the start of the season was out the way we were on comfortably achieve the playoffs form rather than scraping in.

If we want more than the lottery of the playoffs then, as much as we are grateful to those COSU members who think that, probably it should be pointed out that there will be an expectation that the playing budget will change markedly.

Now I am not trying to spend their money for them. If they said the budget won’t be significantly different, we need to look to sustainability, we expect the playoffs again as a minimum, anything more would be a huge bonus then I would be happy with that.

Last years budget and we want to finish top…hmmm

My reading of the chairman's statement is that he's talking about attacking the league in terms of our style of play - and not about attacking it by throwing a load of money at it. He's gently telling the manager how to coach.

He's seen what's happened in the last month - which surely everyone admits is very different from what's happened before, in terms of the way the team has approached games. And he's liked what he's seen.

I'm with him - I've liked it too. Rochdale and FGR were 2 of the best away games of recent years.

He said “attacking the league”, not “attacking the oppositions goal”. If you read the context it’s clear he’s talking about promotion, not tiki taka.

He says attacking the league and not joining the party in the last week or so, or words to that effect. To me that’s not outright we are trying to win the league …as welcoming as that would be…more so that expectations are that we are in and around the automatic spot and playoffs for most the season. As I put in another thread, the 26/27 season would seem a more realistic opportunity to win the league

Totally agree. Realistic target/expectation is another play off push next season and if we dont go up we will push for top the season after

Justin never said he was going to pump loads more money into the budget.

Imagine fans getting on the players back if we dont have a good start. How will that do for morale in the team?

I can remember when Ron Martin started talking about tactics.

What would the chairman know about coaching a football team?

I wonder how that would compare if we'd been in League 2?.

Without a midfield general a real leader in CD and a goal scorer or two in both attack and midfield i dont expect anything more than like this season a playoff place, The league next season will be hard, Last season at the start i predicted a 10th place finish and said if we finish in the playoffs it would be a successful season ,Yes i was a Kev out man and im still not sure he can win us a promotion. Now i will wait and see the personnel he brings into the squad and the ones he saying thankyou to but time is up, i have stated many times the type i think we need and the positions we need strengthening. Many on here have said the same ,so lets wait and see what happens in the next 3 weeks . One thing is for sure there will be no excuses next season , We do need a larger squad to cover for the usual expected injuries ,so whoever replaces an injured player already is comfortable with Kevs style of play

There seem to be quite a few scouts with a better hit rate than Still & Co. We are a big club for this level - go and tap up whoever recruited Barnet's team.
I think Barnet were significantly helped by the several million they have received in sell-on fees over the past couple of years. Puts our £120k for Cardwell a little in the shade...

How does one generate such fees pal? By scouting and developing good players, isn't it?
Yep, unfortunately this is another legacy of the Ron years. Anyone with any promise was either got rid of on the cheap (Nathan Bishop etc), plus the years of Phil Brown and his recruitment of non-saleable, ageing players have hindered us in the medium term past. Not to mention the likes of Lopata being able to walk away rather than command a fee due to Ron antics.

For the last couple of years, we have been recruiting very well, players on the up etc. But that takes time to filter through for sell ons fees such as the ones Ephron Mason-Clarke and Jack Taylor fetched for the Bees, who have been doing this for years and years.

We're on the right path but Barnet had a lot more money than us last year, as showed by beating us to the signature of Ryan Glover, who was one of the league's stand-out players.

Personally I hope this year we can actually land the Pearces and Glovers of this world that we were after last year. Ollie Pearce's goals would certainly have helped us this year.
