Anyone else disappointed with the friendly's? I see this as a missed revenue opportunity! Wimbledon how many they gonna bring and how many have the urge locally to watch them in a friendly? Charlton might bring a few being a Saturday in summer day out etc but again what local fans fancy this?

What would you suggest?

Most Premier League teams travel abroad for the money. The ones that play matches in this country charge money to have them there.

You won’t get any of the “Northern” Premier League sides come down to Roots Hall for a friendly for naff all money, so you’d be looking at the London based ones. We have played West Ham fairly regularly over the years. The likes of Chelsea are at this Club World Cup, so rule them out. Arsenal, touring, Spurs, will have Champions League qualification matches when they aren’t touring. Then you’d have the likes of Fulham or a Crystal Palace, decent clubs, but would charge us money, and we’d probably get a similar crowd to the likes of Charlton, who don’t charge us.

Southend United will play a friendly against Sky Bet EFL League One outfit Cardiff City in Spain, as part of a pre-season training camp.

The Bluebirds will be our first opposition of the 2025/26 season, with the teams meeting at the Pinatar Arena in Murcia on Saturday, July 12 (7pm kick-off local time).

In the coming days there will be specific packages available for supporters to join us in Spain.

We can also confirm the remainder of our pre-season schedule, with two more matches to be played at Roots Hall.

On July 26, we’ll be welcoming Johnnie Jackson’s AFC Wimbledon to SS2. The Wombles beat Walsall 1-0 in the League Two Play-Off Final to earn a spot in the third tier for the first time since 2022.

We then wrap up our preparations with the visit of Charlton Athletic. Led by former Shrimper Nathan Jones, the Addicks also won at Wembley to earn promotion to the Championship for 2025/26.

Ticket details for all our pre-season fixtures – including our meeting with Cardiff in Spain – will be confirmed in due course.

So this is how the conversation with the wife went last weekend..

Me - 'where do you fancy going on holiday? Croatia, Montenegro, Cyprus?
Wife - 'I like the idea of all of them. We can start looking'
Me - 'Week commencing the 7th July for 2 weeks would be good'
Wife - 'Ok'

After hours upon hours of searching various accommodation and flight searches...

Me - 'I've found something really nice in Paphos, Cyprus. What do you think?'
Wife - 'Yes, that look really nice. I've found this place in Alicante. I really like it. What do you think?'
Me - 'I agree, that would be great. However, I like the place in Cyprus better'
Wife - 'I've never been to Cyprus. So it would be something different for me. If you're happy with Cyprus then we'll book it'

So I booked it and I yesterday when the fixture vs Cardiff was released, I said to myself 'Why didn't I listen to the wife?'

Will I ever learn?..

Not at all. Three decent, local-ish EFL clubs. Luton were in the Prem a little over a year ago. I think it's the best line-up we've had in a while. It's nice to put some money in the coffers of local non-league clubs, of course, but this has to be up there as one of the best pre-season line-ups in terms of sustained quality of opponent, and you'd think that would be great preparation for the players.

A Prem team would have been lovely, but I don't think we'd have got a first team down.

More to the point, you'll end up with an "XI", I.e. an Arsenal XI, which means their youth team. We all know that so won't bother going anyway.
