Surely selling off Royal Mail right now is sheer stupidity?

Apparently, the Government is thinking about selling off Royal Mail.

Now I find this baffling. Throughout this entire financial crisis a lot of the blame has been put at the doors of online companies for robbing the high street of passing trade.

If that's the case, and online shopping is a growth industry, then SURELY the delivery of these items is in the ascendancy too, and the sensible thing would be to make Royal Mail competitive with UPS, FedEx etc and take a large share of this booms monetary return?

Am I missing something, or are we potentially flushing away one of the country's best avenues for actually making some capital gain?

Royal Mail is inefficient, and a strain on the market. Freed of the burden of being a nationalised entity we might see decent prices with added competition.,

The government is thinking of selling off Royal Mail because it is short of money.

I can't see how now could possibly be the best time to sell a business.

If it happens then this will be a defining moment in the relationship between the unions and the government.

Especially one that made a £255,000,000 profit last year...

Makes me sick that everything in this country has to make a profit. Call me an old socialist, but what's wrong with a not-for-profit SERVICE run for the good of the people of the country?

Apperantly Information packs include a ready reckoner so staff can work out how much money they would get if they take redundancy. The minimum is six months pay, while a 57-year-old with 20 years service would receive two years pay.

I think you could call it desperation.

It would be brilliant, but where would the money come from to finance it?

Everything costs money MK, you know that, so who would foot the bill for all these marvelous ventures? Do you think there are thousands of people out there who will work for nothing for the benefit of their fellow countrymen?

You can take this back to the days of the loss making mines which were shut down by Maggie and then ask if they were so wonderful why didnt the next Labour government open them up again.

I'm sure Lord Football will be along any time soon with all the answers.

Wasn't Royal Mail, like BR use to be, a bit of a joke until it was run under more capitalist principles?

I think you are right YB, but now they only tend to use one person for one job, and instruct their postmen to get a certain amount of work done each day. Call me old fashioned but maybe these factors contribute to them making a profit.

Because as I said, the New Labour government sold out their socialist principles as soon as that greasy lying **** Blair got power.

I don't disagree that everything costs money, but do we not pay for stamps and for costs to send parcels at the moment?

Yes we do. It just seems Companies seem to operate at a higher level when they have to, which usually translates to having to make money.

I think Royal Mail needs massive investment to get up to the standards of say UPS - the government aren't willing to put in the cash (& the EU will probably call it state aid even though only the UK has introduced a deregulated market (I think that is right Holland and Germany were thinking about it but not sure they got around to it))
