Glyn Hodges talks to the AFC Wimbledon OS before travelling down to Roots Hall

Team news ahead of our final Leasing.com Trophy group game

Glyn Hodges.jpg
Glyn ready to give young talents a chance at Southend
AFC Wimbledon could progress to the knockout stages of the Leasing.com Trophy on Wednesday night and Glyn Hodges is set to offer young players a chance to grasp that opportunity.

With no game for Southend at the weekend due to international call-ups, Glyn is expecting his opposite number Sol Campbell to put out a strong side at Roots Hall, but our manager had been planning his approach to this game for some time.

Zach Robinson, Jack Madelin, and Finlay Macnab were all on the bench for the home game versus Doncaster on Saturday and with a hectic run of fixtures coming up they could get opportunities.

Speaking ahead of the match, Glyn said: “It’s probably a similar situation to when I first came in. I recognised that the Orient game and winning that after Rochdale would give us a bit of momentum. It was a key game and I think they will be thinking the same about tomorrow. They haven’t got a game at the weekend as their match at Southend has been called off due to international call-ups. I think they are going strong, but it will be a good experience and a good game. This is an opportunity to see where we are with our young ones. We’ve got some good young talent and hopefully they catch the eye tomorrow.

“It’s a good competition. We will take this as an opportunity to put some young ones in and blood a couple of young boys. It’s a taste for them. It’s a competition in which they will look at it every year and think ‘I can get a chance of getting in the first-team here’. If you look at it from the perspective of the Under-21s, they get to play with seniors so it’s a nice mixture. The closer you get to Wembley the more important it gets and it’s a good opportunity to blood the young kids.

“Everyone knows about the injuries last weekend and we’ve got the replay for Doncaster after the Blackpool game, so we’ve got three games in a week coming up. My thoughts are on preparing for all three and making sure that we give ourselves a chance of winning all three and that’s what we will be aiming to do. Will, Ryan, and Max are still out and no one has come back who missed Saturday. I’m hoping that a few more come back on Thursday or Friday to have a chance of making Blackpool, but they will not be ready for this game.”

AFC Wimbledon Team News
Tommy recalled in time to face Southend tonight, forward in contention for Trophy group match at Roots Hall

Tommy Wood.jpg
Tommy Wood in contention for game

Tommy Wood has returned to AFC Wimbledon after a successful loan spell at Leatherhead, and the striker is in contention for the Leasing.com Trophy group game at Southend tonight.

The former Burnley youngster has been in goal scoring form for the Isthmian League Premier Division side, having netted nine times in all competitions during a two-month spell with the Tanners. During this time, Tommy picked up the player of the month award at Leatherhead.

Manager Glyn Hodges will now be able to call upon the young forward for the game against Southend United as another attacking option. Tommy came on as a substitute in our first group match, as a substitute, in the 77th minute of the opening Trophy group match against Brighton and Hove Albion Under-21s. A victory tonight will guarantee a place in the knockout stages for Wimbledon.

Southend United

Sol Campbell talks to the Southend United OS before the game against AFC Wimbledon

Sol Campbell's AFC Wimbledon Leasing.com Trophy Preview

Sol Campbell OS.jpg

Despite qualification into the next phase of the Leasing.com Trophy now being out of the equation, Sol Campbell does not see Wednesday night’s game as a dead rubber.

Southend lost their first two matches in the competition to Leyton Orient and Brighton U21s and they welcome the AFC Wimledodon in their final group game tomorrow night.

Campbell says he wants to see a performance from his side, no matter what the result is after 90 minutes.

"It means a lot to us,” he said.

"It's all about getting a performance out of the lads. After the last game we need a good performance.

"We need to take the handbrake off. Yes it's hard to do that when you've lost a lot of games, but we've got to start mentally preparing for the league games.

"I'm not saying this is a free hit [against AFC Wimbledon] but it's a game we need to be free in, work hard, want to score goals, want to defend, want to enjoy the challenge.

"The main thing is be free, have passion and do the basics right.

"We need a performance. We need to start approaching games in a good mentality. We have to start well, prepare well - which we do - and start performing as individuals and as a team.

"We're working hard in training, and we need to transfer that onto the pitch."

Campbell will be without Jason Demetriou who has been called up to international duty with Cyprus.

Elsewhere from the squad that lost to Dover, Harry Lennon will not be considered due to disciplinary reasons and Joe Shaughnessy is ruled out for at least a month with a knee injury.

The Blues boss is expected to make some changes to his side, but won’t be making wholesale adjustments.

"There will be a few youngsters [in the side] and some will be on the bench," Campbell added. "A mixture really.

"It's good for the [young] lads to experience that type of pressure."

Chris Phillips at the ECHO talks to Sol Campbell ahead of the game against AFC Wimbledon

Southend United boss Sol Campbell: AFC Wimbledon clash is not a dead rubber

Sol Campbell Echo.jpg Fired up - Southend United manager Sol Campbell
Southend United manager Sol Campbell insists tonight’s Leasing.com Trophy clash against AFC Wimbledon is no dead rubber.

The Shrimpers are unable to advance past the group stages of the competition after losing in their first two games.

But Campbell still believes there is plenty to play for at Roots Hall this evening.

“It means a lot to us,” said the 45-year-old.

“It’s all about getting a performance out of the lads.

“After the last game we need a good performance and we have to take the handbrake off.

“I know it’s hard to do that when you’ve lost a lot of games but we have to start mentally preparing for the League games.

“It’s not a free hit but it’s a game where we need to be free in our play and play our football.”

Campbell has been beaten in his first four games as Shrimpers boss.

But he wants his side to keep giving their all as they attempt to end a 10 match winless streak.

“We have to work hard and we have to want to score goals and defend too,” said Campbell.

“We have to enjoy the challenge and have passion too.

“We have to have the will to do the right things and get the basics right as well.

“We have to start well and we have to start performing as individuals and as a team.

“We work hard in training but we have to take that onto the pitch.”

Campbell seems set to select a strong starting line-up against the Dons, who can still qualify for the knockout stages of the competition.

However, the former England international could also call upon some of the Shrimpers’ young players.

“There will be a few youngsters but I won’t say who just yet because I don’t want to put anyone under pressure,” said Campbell.

“Some of the guys will be on the bench and there will be a mixture of players but it’s good for young players to come in and sample this kind of pressure.

“But the whole squad will need a good performance because we’ve got to get something out of this.”

Centre-back Richard Taylor and strikers Matt Rush and Emile Acquah are among those pushing to be involved this evening.

However, midfielder Isaac Hutchinson is suspended after being sent off against Leyton Orient in Blues’ opening game in the Leasing.com Trophy this season.

Minor point considering how this season has been going but I much prefer the layout of that team announcement over the stupid sticker book one.

Nothing of substance except for admitting the squad is performing "atrociously" , He did however say the council was being proactive in help with the future.... make what you will of that.
