David Jack was born. Probably nearly as famous for scoring the first FA Cup Final goal at Wembley (dribbling round Billie, the white horse and slotting home) as he was for managing us for 6 years! He'd lived in the town and went to school at Hamlet Court whilst his father was the first Southend manager many years earlier.

Is there a plaque on a house nearby?

Here are some pics of the plaque at 254, Hamlet Court Road.

He had some great names, didn't he. I bet he hid Nightingale at school.
"My name is David Bone Jack" ,
"By Jove, he sounds hard" ,
"Come in for your tea Nightingale",
" Oh Mum!"
