Ill be honest they look nasty - i know the yanks took the series in Tampa but i wouldnt be surprised to see them win the division with the amount of runs (A's excluded ;)) they put up on a daily basis.

I think the Yanks and Sux are playing for second in the division......

I think you're being overly generous there Benji, my only concern with the Rays is how badly they came up short against the Yanks last month. I can see both teams winning 100 games, with there being only a tiny differential at the top either way, with the ALCS as the de facto World Series.

Hurrah, my Reds now top the division after a 2-1 series win v the Cards.

We now need to sort out the roster and dump some of those relief pitchers as we don't seem interested in using them, what with our starters keep throwing complete games.

Wow..... 9-3 up in the 9th inning and lose to a grand slam 10-9.... thats some effort.

Im guessing this would be a good reason you havent been the bullpen too often...

Yeah, that's a pretty special effort. I'm surprised it's not a record.

I actually think the bullpen isn't that bad. I don't like to blame Dusty for keeping pitchers in too long, but I think he was guilty of this when he tried to get a 3rd inning out of Lincoln. Lincoln's been pretty good for a single innings, but Dusty keeps on trying to run him out there for multiple innings and he keeps on getting hit when he comes out again.

But what really cost us was bad defence. Cairo (God knows why he's on the roster, let alone was out there ahead of defensive specialist Janish) got one stuck in his glove and missed a double play and the walk off grand slam was helped over the fence by Nix, another bench player.

Will be interesting to see if we fold or bounce back. The interleague series against the Racist Mascots is going to be pretty big I reckon.

Well they bounced back well in the first match, with Nix going 3-4 with a HR and two doubles and the defence showing well. Am really enjoying the defence highlights with the likes of Rolen and Phillips in the infield and Stubbs and Bruce in the outfield. Rolen had a great play with a grab and a throw on the turn to nail Kearns.

We're not top though because of a Brad Penny grand slam - WTF?

Rays on pace to win only 115 games now.

I like the way the Reds are playing with strong pitching and great defence, I really hope they can keep it up as it would be good to see the old Big Red Machine in the post season. They play a similar way to the Rays but they lack a megastar like Longoria or Crawford. That said, the Rays will be lacking a Crawford next year when he bolts to the Bronx.

Well that's one of the strong pitchers down as Homer Bailey is on the DL with a bad shoulder. Cueto is also struggling with blisters.

The Big Red Machine was obviously before my time, but this is the strongest Reds team I can remember (although as I wasn't really following in 1990 or 1995 - I think 1996 was when I went to my one and only Reds game). In the Kingdom of the Blind, Gordon Brown is PM.

ps Votto is a superstar and Bruce could become one.

Two losses in a row at home to the Sux and the Rays suddenly look fragile. Tonight's game takes on a huge significance.

But to put that into perspective, I was shocked to hear over the weekend about the death of Jose Lima, who at 37 was a year younger than my good self. Horrible news.

RIP Lima Time. Believe it.

Joe Posnanski (who I mention/link on SZ nearly as many times as Uxbridge mentions Bill Simmons) wrote a good obituary/eulogy the other day.

Unfortunately my internet is playing up at the moment and I can't load it to provide a link, but I'm sure you can find it if you google Posnanski and Lima.

Ubaldo Jimenez had another great outing tonight, he pitched 8 scoreless inning to improve his record to 9-1 and drop his ERA to 0.88. The Rockies bats are also finally heating up a bit, they've now won 4 in a row.

My Reds aren't half streaky at the moment. They score 27 runs over 2 games, then get blanked over 10 innings by a ****-poor Astros team. Then last night they concede 12 themselves.

3 up in the bottom of the first looked promising, but its now 3-3.

No perfect game tonight then.

I watched a couple of Rays games against the White Sox a few weeks back. Thankfully the ones I watched were victories for the Rays. White Sox looked pretty poor in those wins, yet won the other games I didnt see.

It's a great evening spent at the Baseball. The stadium is incredible and puts the millions spent on Wembley to shame. Genuinly one of the best sporting venues I have been to. Great facilities, seats, parking etc. Being able to sit in a spacious seat with a cold beer, some food and watch some sport is a great way to spend the evening.

Hope the your Reds keep doing what they're doing YB, despite a crappy season so far for the Cubs it's good to see the Cardinals not getting it all their own way.

The one silva lining for the Cubs is the form of Carlos Silva since he was traded from the Mariners, 8-0 so far, after a dreadful time in Seattle and they got Milton Bradley....ha!

Also great to see the Rays going so well too Rusty.

as with most things here, hype is something the americans excel at -- so for the last week ive heard nothing but Steven Strasburgs MLB debut. Being curious i tuned in last night, and ebven taking into account the opposition, the guy exceeded the hype. I havent watched a lot of baseball so i cant compare him to the greats - but this guy looked legit... the batters looked completely clueless.

Will be interesting to see how the Nats will manage him this season - but dont for a second think this guy is being over hyped...

Agreed, Strasburg looks to have some absolutely sick stuff. With the Nats taking another can't miss prospect in Bryce Harper I can see them following the Rays blueprint of ******* for so long that they accrue enough high level draft picks to become good. Having said that, I hope they don't lose one of theirs to crack cocaine and the Rangers via YB's Reds (Hamilton did have a cup of coffee in Cincy didn't he?).

Anything short of a first ballot Hall of Famer and he's overhyped.

That said, he's made a HoF type start.

The Nationals were already starting to look half decent compared to what they were like a year or two back (it's all relative and they were truly woeful), with Strasburg and Bryce Harper they could be scarily good.

Question is, could they hold onto both if they become the superstars they are billed as? Washington's crowds have been pretty poor in the past, would two superstars change that?

The starting pitchers for the All-Star game were announced today and it will be the Ubaldo Jimenez vs David Price. A great moment for two teams that don't get the kind of attention they deserve. Jimenez is going into the break at 15-1 with a sterling ERA even after having a rocky June. And even though I don't pay much attention to the AL after looking at Price's stats its hard to argue with him getting the nod for the American League.
