Memory Lane 30 years ago today..... a certain SVC made his debut

Nobody is talking about Steve Brown who also scored that day...
Or Steve Jones of Billericay Town who our manager at the time wanted to sign and Vic overruled him wonder what happened to him after he left West Ham.

Steve Jones would have scored about 2 goals in that side.

I think our other debutant that day was Scott Ashenden. The contrast between his career and Stan’s couldn’t have been more stark.

Turning out to be our most shrewdest signing!

Sometimes there is a connection between 2 parties, this is an example of it.

Did he play a game or two for us?
Yes. He signed on loan many years later at the tailend of a season. It was a weird signing as he was on a lot and we didn’t have anything to play for.

Maybe he was the first of the Ron big name signings?

Back in the day, Ron was livid about the signing and John Main’s overall stewardship of the cash.

When Webby came back his first task was to cut the wage bill, hence the departure of the excellent Mark Tinkler (now assistant manager at Middlesbrough - our next FAYC opponents) and others of course - including John Main.

Ah yes, that sound right on the timing.

And yet Ron subsequently signed off on Michael Kightly, Peter Clarke, Neil Harris, Freddy Eastwood’s return, Lee Barnard’s return, Theo Robinson’s return etc etc as we lived beyond our (and his) means.
