4-2-3-1 is our best formation at the moment.

We should play 4-2-3-1 formations which would suit the team we have now, if everyone is fit.

Bishop; Elvis, Taylor, Kiernan, Ralph; Hamilton, Dieng (as the two midfielders at the base, one to protect the back 4 and one can push forward to support the attacking area); McLaughlin, Hutchinson, Hopper (play in central role of attacking 3 that support the lone striker), Humphrey with pace, power, shooting ability & to hold the ball up for our supporting players. 4-2-3-1 can help to get our full back forward to put dangerous ball in the box.

So with Hopper playing like that, it's a 4-2-2-1-1. Very narrow, leaving us exposed down the channels or the 2 and 2 in mf getting pulled too far apart and exposed down the middle.

Also, why take Dieng out of central defense when he's demonstrably much better there than he his further up?

As much as the formation is important, it is secondary to the tactics utilised. However we send the team out, whatever formation, we are going to struggle playing tippy-tappy football at the back. Furthermore, as clearly seen against Oxford, we defended set pieces with every man back. No out ball possible. Our tactics continually invite further pressure on a side that is already struggling with confidence.

I do believe certain players have let us down and the results have killed our confidence but I also believe we have had a turnover of managers, all making similar mistakes, and the players have no confidence in the way they are asked to play.

Wasn’t it Terry Venables who invented/played the ‘Christmas tree’ system.

Sol is still learning about the strengths and weaknesses of his players, squad and team selections: & players are still coming back from injury which further mixed up selection, formation and tactics.
I expect Sol has very quickly formed opinions on who he wants to keep or not, with others who he is yet to be swayed by, and it is only by playing them that he can get a truer knowledge of their value.
At this stage, in this car crash of a season, being prepared for longer time/term squad necessities is taking place in preparation for the transfer window, winding down of contracts and who is set to make a strong promotion push in Div2.
