Question A mystery player (from yesteryear, not a transfer rumour!)

A mate from work has just posed this one to me:

His mum and dad went around their friends house at the weekend and it turns out their friend apparently used to play for Southend.

His rough age is 65, so I guess playing around 40 years ago.
His name is Mert, but not sure on the spelling.
