Post-Match Thread and Ratings Accrington Stanley 1-2 Southend United

Well done Southend and very well done Sol and your back up team.
Onwards and upwards........what a difference a win makes !

Sol had special praise for Mark Oxley after the game. He said he not only makes great saves, but it's his decision making that brings confidence to the defence. He said something about players need confidence in their keeper.

Does make you wonder how many more points we’d have if Sol hadn’t stuck with Bishop for so long. Don’t think it’s any coincidence that form has improved since Ox has been in the team.

A couple of points:

Last time we won in the league we had this referee
Last time we won Chalie Kelman scored (indeed the only time we've won he's scored!)
Should we have played Oxley earlier?

We should have got a third a couple of times too. It was never guaranteed but the effort levels were there from the players and none of the fans got on the players backs when there was the occasional stray pass or wrong choice taken, I honestly think that makes a huge difference. I also got 16-1 for a 2-1 victory which went some way towards paying for the trip!

Oxley needed time out the side, as he wasn't exactly on great form himself. Maybe that is what has helped get his form back

funny old game….Oxley finds his mojo and no Mr Cox.....and we go and win

any updates on the injury to Dieng

Well blow me down we ****ing won!!!!

Can we dream and go on a run.....only 12 points behind MK and they have played a game more........

What a lovely feeling - walking away from a football ground knowing that there are 3 points in the bag. Not completely deserved but isn't football just like that?

The last 5 minutes of injury time were quite tense ....... memories of Blackpool last season are still quite painful. Not that Stanley looked like they could equalise - more due to worries that we would do something daft ourselves! By then we had given Stanley as good as we received in the 2nd half. From the moment Demi strolled up to the penalty spot and stroked the ball in we looked like a side that might not just be there to make up the numbers. Suddenly we not only challenged for 50/50 balls but we actually won a couple. And we moved forward in numbers, at speed and passed to each other. Corners were won, chances were created.

It only lasted for 10 minutes or so and then it was back to the pattern of play that was evident for most of the 1st half. Strikers isolated, midfield sucked back and the defence hoofing away the ball only for it to come back again.

How Stanley managed to miss the net time after time in the 1st half is a mystery - a strong perfromance by Oxley helped - but almost from the minute we scored (cracking goal that it was) we were under the cosh. Getting in at half time without conceding another goal was vital.

And so by the time Barratt came on (another 2 injuries today - Kelman and Dieng) we were struggling again. But sometimes it only takes 1 player to make a difference. A couple of tricks, beating a defender, getting a foul, keeping the ball and suddenly the balance of the game starts to change. Barratt then hit the post and the Stanley goalie saved when Barratt was through on goal.

Almost wild celebrations at the final whistle.

Good performances from a number of players including Elvis, Macca, Kelman, Barratt and Hopper (who tried and tried all game) but Oxley wins man of the match for me for keeping us in the game in the 1st half and commanding his box.

Great to read a positive post match post and appreciate when unable to make the game myself.

One point to make though, isn't it Sam BarrAtt rather than BarrEtt?

Or if Sol had been appointed a few weeks earlier ........ never mind let's enjoy today !

Mark Oxley 10.
Everyone else 7

Great to see the Ox with a new lease of life.
As I said a couple of weeks ago he was far more vocal and brave. Good enough for this team if he can keep it up and as Sol touched upon....the defenders need a confident bloke behind them.
Better keep Neville Southall on ice while the Ox is getting 10’s?

lovely set up by Hopper to Kelman and a great srike ...

Goodship shows a good understanding of League One refereeing with his decision to go down

Very good game by Oxley today; commanding, assured presence. Much better distribution too.
I thought Kiernan and Milligan had bad games. Elvis at fault for their goal. Other than that a fair performance against a very poor Accrington side. BUT 3 points in the bag and the team are looking like a team now and working for each other more. Looks to me like the tide has turned. Can’t wait for 1Feb...
