A short Refwatch this week as there is little to say about tomorrow's referee. He is Tim Robinson from Bognor Regis and this is his first ever match as a League referee.

His previous Southend appointments have all been as an Assistant Referee, the most recent of which was Torquay away last season.

His card count in the Blue Square Conference last season was on the low side.

Assisting will be the ginger-haired school teacher from Ipswich, Carl Fitch and Wes Linden from Middlesex.

The team is completed by Chris O'Donnell from Leighton Buzzard doing the 4th Official duties.

Amongst the referees we will not see this season are:

FOSTER, D (David) - Tyne & Wear
HALL, AR (Andy) - West Midlands
HEGLEY, GK (Grant) - Hertfordshire
McDERMID, D (Danny) - Hampshire
PENN, AM (Andy) - West Midlands
QUINN, P (Peter) - Cleveland
WALTON, P (Peter) - Northamptonshire
WEBSTER, CH (Colin) - Tyne & Wear

They have all left the list of League referees. Some will be missed less than others.

Mick, have these refs left the list because of retirement or were their marks last season poor?.

I think they were all retirement due to age, long term injury or unavailability.

How do newbie refs usually fair in their first game? Mixed bag? Do they tend to be overly strict? Too cautious. Better still, for us, are they homers?

Having ranted about this 'ref' throughout the game yesterday I have since calmed down and reflected on his performance. And I still think it was a totally inept performance. The only thing consistent about him was his inconsistency. Hopefully, this will be the last we see of Mr Robinson. This was not a bad day at the office rather someone who shouldn't be in the office p.s had we won I would still feel the same about this individual

Average ref, no stupid yellow cards, he should have sorted out the time wasting earlier but he did add on lots of time to try to balance up his under officiating of earlier. Not sure on the pen appeals; if they weren't pens were they dives/simulation so either pens or yellow cards?

Their number 5 had his arms round our player every corner holding them down but nothing ever given. Cresswell was having his shirt pulled off him on one corner but still nothing.

Ref was awful.

The number 5 also blatantly fouled Leonard in the pen area, practically picked him up on his right hip and moved him bodily!

The shirt pulling needs a referee's initiative as it happens week on week and a few pens would sort it out. Yesterday, twice Tomlin was chasing a ball that was possibly reachable when he got bodily ejected from his route (fouled!) but in the box those types of cynical ploys are not deemed worthy of any ref action; if he had just been blocked ok but when he gets shoved then isn't that an off the ball foul worth some decision?
