Coley hopes video nasty will inspire Reds

Stanley aim to get back on track against Southend after 'frank open discussion' following Ipswich game

John Coleman hopes time spent watching a DVD of the Ipswich game will pay off against Southend at the Wham Stadium on Saturday.

The Stanley boss admitted about the 4-1 defeat at Portman Road last Saturday: ‘I haven’t seen us play that bad in one half of the game’ as his side trailed 3-0 at half-time.

The 17th placed Reds have a chance to rectify it when they take on Sol Campbell’s Southend, who are 22nd in the league with one league win this season.

“We watched the first half of the Ipswich game on Monday and that took us the best part of three-and-a-half hours to dissect it,” said Coleman.

“It was a frank open discussion, there was lots of input from the players and hopefully we have set a process in place to avoid it in the future.

“I haven’t seen us play that bad in one half of football and we have got to hope it is a one-off. There were a lot of players not firing at the same time, eight or nine who were below par, and Ipswich were up for the game.

“We have got to get back to winning ways and that will come down to hard work and players understanding their role in the team and carrying it out.

“If we play like that we won’t win another game this season.”

Southend are firmly rooted in the relegation places with 10 points but have drawn four out of their last five games.

“They have stopped the rot a little bit, they have only lost once in five games and we know it will be a tough game,” said Coleman.

“They are fighting for their lives and we will have to be at our best if we are to get anything out of the game.

“Sol Campbell has had an impact, he had such a successful playing career that he will get a response out of the players but as his job goes on it’s to back it up with setting up the team and getting the players to play how he wants.”

Coleman admits he is still looking to add to his squad with winger Sean McConville out for the rest of the season but he is hoping Jordan Clark will be back after a hamstring injury.

“In my opinion, Sean McConville and Jordan Clark are the two best wideman in the league and it’s difficult to cope without both of them but we have to get on with it.

“I was hoping Jordan would be fit for the Ipswich game but he wasn’t and again I am hoping he will be fit for this weekend but you can’t rush a hamstring injury. Jordan will know when he is right and when he comes back he will give 100 per cent.

“It is a slow process trying to sign players but we hope to get a couple in.”

Sol Campbell Southend United’s manager talks to OS before travelling to Accrington Stanley

Blues boss Sol Campbell previews the long trip up to Lancashire to face Accrington Stanley this weekend.

John Coleman's side were on the end of a 4-1 defeat at the hands of promotion chasing Ipswich Town last weekend.

Blues come into the game on the back of three consecutive draws, while it's also four in the last five that have ended with the points shared.

Here's the thoughts of Campbell on the clash...

On trying to maintain the unbeaten run this calendar year…

“We’re on the right track but we just need a little bit more belief in front of goal, but we are getting the chances.

“They’re falling to all sorts of players, we just need to convert and hopefully one of these games they all go in for us.”

On the positive affect keeping a clean sheet last time out had…

“Well it has to really!

“For the defenders, for the goalkeeper, for the team as well. It was over a year at home since we last kept a clean sheet.

“We just need a little bit more composure in front of goal, but we are getting the chances.

“We’ve just got to add to it with some goals and get a little bit of luck as well, but you need to impose yourself and force the issue to earn that luck.

“We are working hard, the lads are putting a great shift in, so if we keep doing that then something has got to drop for us sooner or later.”

On needing to show resolve…

“The lads have started to show some character, coming back from a goal down [against AFC Wimbledon for example], they've done really well.

“The character is definitely building in all the players so that's a really good thing for me to see.

“We need characters all over the pitch from now until the end of the season.”

On Accrington…

“We’ve got to set our stall out and make sure we deal with their threats but also we’ve got to make sure we play our football and take our chances.

“We’ve been playing really good. Last week was a solid performance but we just need a bit of luck in front of goal.

“We are getting in key positions, we just need a push to get us over the line.

“It’s the final hurdle and that bit more belief that when we get in the positions we are going to score.

On how to get that…

“Well when you’ve had so many games not scoring freely and things like that, it takes a little bit away from your game, that’s normal.

“We’re trying to put that back in, we are making them feel that they can score or get a ricochet off a goalkeeper, or believing they will be in the right place at the right time to knock it in for the team. That’s what you’ve got to believe, if you stop believing then there’s not worth you turning up.

On the team news…

“There’s no other concerns. The usual niggles here or there but every club has got that.”

On the transfer market…

“We’re trying hard to get bodies in, it’s always difficult but we are trying.”

Sol Campbell talks to the Chris Phillips at the ECHO before travelling to Accrington Stanley

SOL Campbell feels Southend United are on the right track - despite their lack of victories.

The Shrimpers head to Accrington Stanley tomorrow looking for their first League One win since September.

But Campbell has been boosted by a run of three successive draws and feels Blues can get back to winning ways if they improve in front of goal.

“We’re on the right track,” said Campbell.

“I just think we need a bit more belief in front of goal.

“We are getting the chances and hopefully they will start to go in for us.

“We need to compose ourselves and keep working hard.

“The lads are really putting a shift in and if you keep working hard something has to drop for you sooner or later.

“The lads have started to show great character as well and the character is definitely building in all the players.

“We need characters on the pitch between now and the end of the season.”

The Shrimpers, who remain second from bottom in the table, have drawn five of their last seven matches.

But Campbell knows his team will be facing another tough challenge at Accrington tomorrow.

“We are challenged every weekend,” said the former England defender.

“We just have to make sure we set our stall out and look after their threats.

“We have to make sure we play our football and take our chances.

“We’ve been playing really good and last week was a really solid performance.

“We just need some luck in front of goal.”

Campbell has yet to win a League game since taking charge of the Shrimpers in October.

But the 45-year-old feels his side are now close to grabbing a victory.

“We need a bit more of a push to get over the line but it’s coming,” said Campbell.

“We have to have a bit more belief that we’re going to score.

“We’re practising all the different scenarios but they can’t be frightened and they just have to go for it. They need to be free and just take it.

“Once one goes in, confidence will be lifted. At the moment we seem to be facing keepers playing out of their skin but the main thing is we’re getting these chances. We have to be more ruthless.”

The Big Preview

Accrington Stanley vs Southend United

Big Preview.jpg

Overview

Southend United are back on the road this weekend as they travel to Lancashire to take on John Coleman’s Accrington Stanley at the Wham Stadium.

Blues have a good recent record at Accrington; a record that they hope will hold them in good stead as they look to build on recent improved performances by grabbing a much-needed victory.

In their way are a Stanley side whose run of three wins and two draws over December earned Coleman the Manager of the Month award and put them seven points clear of the drop zone.

Form

Blues remain without a win in 16 league matches, but they are currently unbeaten in their last three following draws against MK Dons, AFC Wimbledon and Tranmere Rovers.

Those three stalemates have meant that Southend have now drawn five of their last seven league games as they continue to look for a first league win since September 21st.

Accrington’s form over Christmas steered them away from danger thanks to wins over Portsmouth, Blackpool and Burton, but Stanley have lost their last two, losing to Rochdale and Ipswich.

Last Meeting

Saturday 28th September 2019

Southend United 0-1 Accrington Stanley

Bishop 52’

Southend suffered a 1-0 defeat to Accrington Stanley at Roots Hall thanks to an early second-half strike from Stanley striker Colby Bishop.

After a goalless first-half, Bishop struck seven minutes after the interval, getting on the end of a cut back by Jerome Opoku before firing low past Mark Oxley for the game’s winner.

Blues Team News

Blues have no fresh injury concerns following last weekend’s draw with Tranmere, as confirmed in Sol Campbell’s pre-match press conference which you can read more from here.

Simon Cox left the club yesterday following the termination of his contract with the likes of Charlie Kelman and Brandon Goodship pushing for a starting place upfront.

Defenders Harry Lennon, Joe Shaughnessy and Nathan Ralph remain out long-term, while midfielder Luke Hyam remains a doubt with a hamstring injury.

Accrington Danger Man

He scored the winner when these two sides last met back in September and he’s continued to go from strength to strength, making Colby Bishop the one to watch tomorrow afternoon.

Bishop has taken to the Football League like a duck to water after signing for Stanley in the summer, having spent almost the entirety of his career up to that point playing in non-league football.

This season, Colby has scored 12 goals in all competitions and has notched five in his last six outings, including braces against Bolton Wanderers and Portsmouth.

Ref Watch

Antony Coggins is the referee for Saturday’s clash, being assisted by Robert Akin and Conor Brown with Helen Edwards standing in as the fourth official.

Coggins has taken charge of 16 games so far this campaign and has yet to issue a red card, though he has brandished 54 yellows at an average of just over three per game.

It’ll be the second time this season Coggins has been in the middle for a Blues away game. And for those that like their omens, his only other Southend game this season was the 1-0 win at MK Dons, while his only game officiating Blues last season was in fact a 3-0 victory against, yes you guessed it, Accrington Stanley!

Away Fans Guide

The Wham Stadium – better known as the Crown Ground – is one of the smallest grounds in the League One with a capacity of just over 5,000.

Those making the trip to Lancashire tomorrow will find themselves in the corner of the Eric Whalley Stand, situated opposite the dugouts, with Blues being given an allocation of 575 tickets.

For more information on the ground, including info on travel directions, where to park and where to go for a pre-match drink, check out awaygames.co.uk’s guide by clicking here.

Tickets

Matchday sales will be available with no increase in price and can be paid by cash or card, this will be from the Ticket Sales Office at Accrington’s ground.
