Post-Match Thread and Ratings Aldershot 2-0 Southend United

Terrible. Everything about that was flat and dull. We lacked any cutting edge up front and were ponderous and slow in midfield.

Our wing play - which has been our biggest and most dangerous threat - was non existent. Absolutely no spark whatsoever today.

The most frustrating thing was, we were the better team IMO. Aldershot were gifted the first & caught us cold with the set piece for the second. Other than that they offered very little and even their fans seemed shocked at how easy the afternoon was.

Frustrating and infuriating in equal measures today.

Take Gateshead last week and raise it today

Another bad day at the office. Started well and had lots of possession but did little with it. But we looked the better side and Hobson miss controls, gifts them a goal and the feeling was game over. Second half Hobson gives a needless foul away and we concede from the freekick. We huffed and puffed and had a few efforts on goal as did they as they hit us on the break.

What concerns me slightly is that when we concede we don’t look like a team that will come back and win. That’s two weeks on the trot we’ve controlled large parts of the game but come away empty handed. If we don’t score first we don’t win football matches

Miley again stand out for me. Colin’s kicking was woeful. Hobson had a day to forget as did Wes. Gus and Ralph got forward but delivery was poor. Front three worked hard but had no end product

705 travelling shrimpers got behind the team with no reward again

Big week on the training field needed

Complete and utter ****ing pony.

Players weren't on it once they crossed the white line. No communication, players hiding, confidence all of a sudden evaporated. Not quire sure what's gone wrong there. They weren't helped by Kev though.

Not entirely sure why he felt the need to change things up so much. I know the Gateshead performance and result left much to be desired but it was off the back of 11 unbeaten. Why change the shape and move away from the base shape that has served us so well?

We suffered from not having 3 in the middle today. We lost the midfield battle as a result and Miley and Fonguck didn't have the licence to get upfield like they have been doing.

It feels like the shape was changed to shoehorn Ralph and Mooney in and that was a mistake. Our style has evolved and settled whilst they've been out injured and now they're back, it's difficult to see where they fit in at all, let alone why they should be shoehorned in like that. Bridge has shown us what we need from a LWB getting high up the pitch and that just isn't Ralph's game. Bridge suffered today from having Ralph getting in his way and it ruined our wing play, which had been a real strength recently.

And as for Mooney.....talk about flattering to deceive. Again, I'm not sure he's a good fit for what Kev wants to do. He runs into cul-de-sacs all the time, he's easily pushed off the ball and he doesn't work hard enough off the ball. I can maybe understand Kev thinking his directness and trickiness might have been a replacement for Powell, but I think we've seen today how important Powell actually is.

Front line just utterly powderpuff. Alongside the ineffectual headless chicken Mooney, Cosgrave offered nothing either. He runs around a bit but there's no conviction, he's just doing it for the sake of it rather than trigger pressing like Powell and Cardwell do. He can sometimes hold the ball up but 9 times out of 10 when the ball is played into him, his first touch is shocking. Doesn"t get stuck in or contest headers either. The ball stuck up top a bit better when Wreh came on but damage was done by then.

We were firmly on top from around 10 minutes in until they scored, without ever really threatening. Love Hobbo to bits but he does have that kind of mistake in him, although the hospital passes across the back 3 leading up to it didn't help him. The goal was completely against the run of play and heads just dropped from that point on. So disjointed. Without the sloppy, lucky opener we might have kept knocking at the door and scraped a 1-0.

Huge congrats to Master Sandat on his debut. From the limited involvement, he looked like he could be quite handy. Good heigh, decent build.

Back to 3 across the middle next week please.
