On Saturday Rob Lewis, from Shrewsbury, makes his second visit to Roots Hall as a referee. This is the first season of his second spell as a League referee, having lost his place in 2008 primarily due to injury.

His only previous visit to the Hall was for the 2-0 home victory over Luton (Bailey and a late goal from Walker) in 2007/8. Previously he had refereed our 3-0 defeat at Derby in the Championship the previous season. Five cautions in that match; unusually four to the home side.

His main claim to fame is the fact that he was the assistant referee involved in the incredible decision when Tottenham's Pedro Mendes' long shot at Old Trafford was about two yards over the line but no goal was given.

The first 16 matches of this season he was showing a very average 48 yellows and no reds but in his last half a dozen matches, he's really gone out with cards blazing and shown 34 yellows and 3 reds in just those 6 matches including 10 yellows and a red in his last match !!

Not to be confused with famous referee R. Lewis from Great Bookham, who refereed the Hillsborough tragedy match (and our 4-4 draw with Northampton).

Assisting him will be Gary Evetts from Hertford and Matt Foley from London with John Hopkins, who was a regular Southend Sunday morning referee for many years, acting as 4th official.

Not sure what happen there but the rep added should have been positive so it would be appreaciated if this could be amended or I can be advised how to correct it myself.
