At training today....5th Sept.

I was able to go and watch training today. They played an 8 v 8 with the youth goalies in goal. All the injured centre backs and Hendrie weren't there.

Cox was almost back to his best, Smashing them in, I just hope he can bring that to the 1st team games.

McLaughlin seemed to be moving much better and was sprinting faster. He seemed to be holding back lately, probably fear of breaking down.

Ranger is getting there fitness wise, but still a way to go to last a full match. He is the best I have ever seen when he's back to goal and shielding the ball from the defender behind who is trying to steal it off him, and also grabbing his shirt or pushing into his back. He sort of makes himself big and puts his arms out to stop them coming around the side. Sometimes he just steps back with strength to keep the ball at a distance from them. He had a few wrestling matches today, but it's all good because that happens in real games.

Kieran Richardson played in midfield. He showed obvious class, and clever use of the ball, but blowing a bit towards the end, so not yet fully fit.

Elvis had Timlin next to him in defence. Timlin was giving him advice when play stopped and Elvis showed the body language of someone taking it on board. Good to see. Lenny was class today playing at centre back again and orchestrated everything for his team, Franz Beckenbauer style.

McLaughlin and McGlashan still keep blasting ball over the bar. They have the power, but just need to stop getting under the ball. It's something they could easily put right with a bit of after training practise. If Mark Gower put a free kick over the bar or off target to the side, you would see him practising free kicks the next week after training. That's the mentality these two need.

The Irish travellers and their noisy mini motor bikes have gone.

Ben Coker was in full kit with no cast and no crutches. He walked around the pitch over and over as the others played their match. I bet he was itching to get out there. He only has a very slight limp now. I think he will be able to do a slow short jog in about two weeks, if the bone has mended properly.

The doping guys were there again today, but this time they weren't surprising the players as they left. The actually walked up near to the pitch as the players were playing.

good to see Richardson is still training .Like to see him get an offer until the end of the season .

Interesting feedback on current state of the squad TSNB,

I guess still no word on Michael Turner either?

Tell me though, is there a set timing schedule for training sessions (time / days?) and are they all open to the public to watch? I work from home a couple of days a week, and nipping out for an hour to see a training match is tempting...

I hope we sign Richardson and wright as we are short on numbers but would prefer Richardson for a year of the two

It's well worth it, you will enjoy it. If there are no games on that day, they start about 11am and finish about 12.15pm. You sometimes see set routines, warm ups, stretching, running, and usually a game. Sometimes 3 or 4 players stay out after 12.15pm for a little kick about if they cant fit them all in the canteen. You don't even have to leave your car, just park in front of the first pitch. It's only closed to the public if they have a behind closed doors match.

75 minutes "work" a day. Wow, the life of a pro-footballer....how they cope is beyond me.

Yeah MK I thought the same! But some of them have to work Saturdays you know, if they can be bothered that is:winking:.

It's a hard life isn't it? I would like to see a few of them put in an extra hour to improve something on their game that's no good or needs fine tuning. Timlin could improve his passing and corner taking. The Macca's could improve their shooting. Is it to much to ask? Even if it was only one hour a week, we would see an improvement.

Are you joking, they train for an hour and 15 minutes? Or do they come back out after lunch?

If that's true then it's no wonder we never look threatening from corners or Lenny's god awful long throws. Surely you need more than an hour to practice different areas of the game that need work which is been highlighted in recent games, good or bad.

No, I'm not joking. That's pretty standard for most professional football clubs. At Southend it was the same time under Tilson and Sturrock. The only player at Southend that has had a proper job was Ben Coker. He was a labourer on a building site. I think it shows in his play as he has a real hunger and desire.

They have the day free after lunch. Some live in or around London, so their day is longer, but they seem to be the ones picking up the penalty points and bans on their license. It is what it is. Good money for playing a game they love with few hours involved. Good luck to them I say. But yes, I would like to see some of them stay an hour after training and put the effort in to improve themselves. It would be good for them, us and the club.

For example, we have no specialist free kick taker. At training there's about 6 that like to have a go, but none really stands out or seems to practice it. Like I mentioned before, Mark Gower would stay behind after training fine tuning his free kicks. He would put those dummy defender things up. Sometimes he had a goalie, most times not. He aimed for the top corners with whip and pace.
We had that free kick against Rochdale in the perfect position, and Kightly put it straight into the wall.

I didn't realise we allow players to get saturday jobs. What happens if they have to play a football match? Are they allowed to do paper rounds instead? I used to do a Saturday job and a paper round when I was a yoof. So I know how busy these guys are.

...and by the way he carries a hod and a cup of tea and a bacon sandwich and is always on his mobile when he dribbles with the ball?

I remember reading that beckham used to spend at least 30 mins after every training session taking 50 free kicks from each side of the pitch. Still, what did he know, I'm sure our players know best.

also did you see ranger stay behind for extra fitness work?

I didn't see Ranger do the extra fitness work the day I went, but I have heard he is doing it with the fitness guys.

James Ward-Prowse practises every week for Southampton. This is him nearly 4 years ago. He's even better now.
