I was interested in the discussion on another thread about what effect a new stadium could have on our clubs home attendances.

So I thought I would check to see what difference it made to our attendances when we switched from the Greyhound Granger Road Stadium to Roots Hall in 1955.

Season 1954-55
Greyhound Stadium Granger Road

League Division 3 (South)
Finishing Position 10th

Total Home attendance 1954-55 221,198
Average Home League Gate 9,617
Biggest Home League Gate 18,000
Smallest Home League Gate 4,000

We beat Col Ewe 4-2 at Greyhound Stadium in front of 8,478

FA Cup

Highest Home Gate 20,594
Highest Away Gate 53,043 Our highest ever away gate (against Everton)

Season 1955-56
Roots Hal

League Division 3 (South)
Finishing Position 4th

Total Home attendance 1955-56 254,472
Average Home League Gate 11,064
Biggest Home League Gate 21,000 Our highest ever home League Gate (Against Leyton Orient)
Smallest Home League Gate 5,000

We beat Col Ewe 4-0 at Roots Hall in front of 8,404

FA Cup

Highest Home Gate 29,500 Our 2nd highest ever (against Man City)
Highest Away Gate 11,238

Looks like we increased attendances by 33,000 for the season, some 1,400 per game in our 1st season at Roots Hall.

The home local derby against Col Ewe the attendance actually decreased by 74.

Info thanks to SUFCdb.

Thanks TBD, thats interesting stats.

And as others has mentioned in other previous posts, and (generally speaking) a new stadium will bring in more attendance.

So taking your past record into account, should in turn lead to more revenue for the club and for players wages / signings etc.

Just using your good research as an example, (although, im not to sure it would be accurate, in terms of when taking into account the population size of the town as a whole and Southend United's catchment area & transport links in 1955 as apose to 60+ years later)

Anyway, thats just say, we moved into Fossetts Farm next season for arguements sake (& season ticket holders and general match day atendee's remain the same as currently at Root's Hall)
And again, We picked up an additional 33,000 tickets over the course of a season (which only add's about 1435 people to each home game, as per your 1955 research).. that still brings in an additional revenue that we never had before of around £725,000 per season.. even before taking into account profits from sales of programmes / food and drink / hospitality boxes / larger capacity for away supporters etc. Maybe closer to £1 million over the course of a season.

Either way, its all "hear say" (no pop group comments needed) LOL.

But Mod's probably need to move this thread to the Future of of SUFC or Fossets Farm topic.

Slightly off topic, but I've often wondered how clubs' results change initially, if at all, when a club moves to a new ground. In other words, does familiarity with a ground have any bearing on results or is it more about the home support and the tactics used by the home and away sides?

Obvious clubs with new stadia such as Rotherham, Donny, Wigan, Swans, Brighton, have all had increase in base/core numbers, although much of that has come from some success on the pitch.
Cov City (and Darlo) haven't done so well and it is obvious to state but it is a bit chicken or egg as to which gets to be the priority.
Bournemouth can't "grow" a fan base with their limitations.
Leicester will be sell outs for as long as the wins keep on coming; AND into Europe!
Derby have got themselves a sizeable core base without doing much trophey-wise.
I have no doubt that we can't maintain progress unless we get FF, and soon, before we hit a stagnation point again with revenues and realistic ambitions as after that decline will follow again.

Yes. However, don't forget we'll be forever paying back Sainsburys for the funds they lent us, and know doubt British Land, MD etc.
