Post-Match Thread and Ratings Ballyfermot United 0 - 0 Southend United, 30th July, pre-season friendly

So after my lame joke about Canvey Island being an overseas friendly, we have a proper one in another country this Tuesday against Ballyfermot United in the Republic of Ireland.

I must admit to knowing very little (ok, absolutely nothing!) about Ballyfermot United but their website says they have over 500 registered players - clearly no problems with an embargo there then! I assume this means over a number of age categories which indicates they are very much a community club.

Top of the list on the website for their senior team is the Senior Sunday 1B team, who the website says play on a Friday night(!) - I assume this is who we will be playing but I am very much guessing here. If anyone can tell me more about this then please comment below.

My research tells me that they beat Cork-based Leeds 3-1 in the second round of the FAI cup recently so I am assuming their season is already underway.

Blues travel to Ireland after the disappointing 3-1 defeat at home to Gillingham. Several players looked rather rusty and it may be no coincidence that the rustiest were those who have been injured for at least part of the pre-season (Taylor, Bridge, Moreton, Andeng-Ndi).

Perhaps of most interest will be if any of the three trialists who featured on Saturday will be making the trip - it certainly seemed like at least Rafferty Pedder should be worth another look.

It sounds like a few Shrimpers will be making the trip to Dublin to watch this one so we look forward to your updates.

Talking to some locals (I work in Dublin) they’re not much more than a Sunday league team, new ground was completed earlier this year. Shouldn’t be a problem for us apparently.

For those coming over and wanting to get taxis etc use an app called “FREENOW” it’s basically the same as Uber. Ground isn’t far from Liffey Valley Shopping centre which has plenty of places to eat.

Look forward to meeting a few of you on Tuesday night

Whereabouts do you live around Dublin? My bro is down in Kildare. Over for EP soon as he’s about 20 mins from Stradbally.

Summary from one of my muckers on Saturday;

" That sub was quality, stupid haircut but proper hard nut, with flair. Like a young Luke Gutteridge!".
Well given his background at Spurs and QPR there is no doubting his ability.

As with many such players it is all about attitude and willingness to put in the work not occasionally but consistently. I guess the Dublin trip will confirm that. IMO cameos in friendlies will add very little. So probably a decision when they get back- that said trialist B has almost qualified for a long service award…

As said elsewhere the trade off is in the background we are pursuing others on the whiteboard and you can’t keep them all on the back burner- and sometimes you let some go waiting for someone else you don’t get.

Depends on these players ££ expectations- with their background if they turn out to be “diamonds” then payback can be significant- if the ££ right then you take a punt occasionally?

Yep. Looked very lively, positive on and off the ball.

Had a good touch and loved a tackle.

Love a wildcard player.

This is an odd one, isn't it? Or is it me?

Time & expense travelling & then playing a team that is reportedly not of a high standard.

Understand that there may be benefits in terms of team building & a change in environment ...... but the team could have travelled to (say) Bristols or Bradford & played a league team. [shoulder shrug:thinking face]

Arrived early. Took a wander to Home Farm, the spiritual home of Ronnie Whelan.PXL_20240729_125947682.jpg

I gather it's more about getting a good weeks training in rather that the match. From what Kev has said Boots & Laces isn't fit for purpose, the new training ground isn't ready & as anyone who went on Saturday would agree there is no way we could train at Roots Hall.

Other clubs will have their pre-season planned well before we even knew we would get to play in 2024/25 & I doubt suitable training environments just grow on trees. We don't know the facilities this club has, it might be well above GWR or the like. Doubt it'd be massively cheaper to find a training location in Bristol or Bradford at short notice & you still need transport & hotels & meals etc.

Also, as you say, the team building & environment elements are probably key.
