We hold a lead over Barnsley for all time League wins (15-11) but haven't beaten them at Oakwell in the League for over 20 years.

Man in charge Saturday will be sixth year referee Brendan Malone from Salisbury refereeing his tenth Southend match.

The ninth match went rather well for us with a 3-0 home win against Coventry not that long ago. Main talking points were his perfectly justified dismissal of Deegan and, much later in the game, his failure to send off their keeper after awarding us a penalty. Again I thought that decision was reasonable. As well as Deegan's two yellows and their keeper's yellow he also cautioned Bolger.

Before that his most recent match was last year's home 0-0 draw with Cambridge. One yellow apiece - Timlin for us. Previously, also last season, the 2-0 defeat at Plymouth when he upset Phil Brown in a match which produced 6 yellows for the home team and a yellow and red for Bolger and a yellow for Thompson who replaced Bolger at the back after his very early dismissal.

Before that it was the 2-2 home draw with Barnet in 2012/3. Yellow for Timlin and 4 of theirs.

A year before it was our inevitable win at Hereford. Prior to that it was 2011/12's home match against an inept Port Vale side when a 3-0 victory gave us our first home League win for a couple of months. They had one sent off and a couple of yellows with just Benyon cautioned for us.

He was in charge of the "dead" match, our fourth game against Macclesfield in 2010/11. Previously he was a late replacement for the Gillingham home game also that season (2-2, 5 yellows, 4 theirs, 1 ours) and, more memorably, before that he refereed the abandoned match at Cheltenham and the rather more successful re-arranged fixture. He cautioned Barry Corr for time wasting right at the end.

He has shown just 65 yellows from 26 games (well below average) and 5 reds (well above average). This includes a few Championship matches.

Unsurprisingly, given it's a 500 mile round trip, this is his first visit to referee at Oakwell.

The Assistants are Ollie Yates from Newcastle-under-Lyme and Paul Marsden from Preston. Fourth Official is Mancunian, Alan Clayton.

That match had the most boring 30 minutes of football I've ever seen. Port Vale were rubbish, we were 3-0 up with half an hour to go and their big centre half gets his marching orders. "Here we go", I thought, "5 or 6 goals here". Nope. We were just absolute beau locks and the rest of the game was as dull as dishwater. Everyone walked out the ground like it was a defeat. That was the first time that I felt that it wasn't all about the result; you had to be entertained as well.

Deegan will trot out tomorrow and go "f*ck me, it's him again!"

LOL!

Ah, but Deegan is now in disguise with long shorts and a tidy beard! :winking:

Deegan doesn't wear long shorts. He's still wearing the cut off ones, but with tight shorts underneath.

You see, all part of the master disguise. He'll easily fool a hapless referee! :winking:

Instead of the referee who did Coventry at home, we have the one who did Coventry away !

Man now in charge is second year League referee, Darren Handley from Bolton who made it on to the League list last season after 6 years of Conference officiating. He is 38 and a PE teacher at Tottington High School.

His 26 matches this season have produced a slightly highish 91 yellows and 4 reds.

He has refereed Southend thrice before. Firstly last season's home 0-0 draw with Plymouth when there was just one yellow for them. He did okay in that game.

Then he brought the curtain down on his first season with our late, late 1-0 win at Exeter. Just one caution again, this time for Barrett.

Lastly was this year's 2-2 draw at Coventry when he cautioned White, Atkinson, Hunt and Mooney (the latter two also being our goalscorers) and a couple of home players.

All other officials as per original post.

Maybe he's Dean Holdsworth's agent....coming down to have a quiet word with PB :winking:

His dad's a referee, he's a referee and no doubt any son will be as well. Family get togethers must be a riot.
