Bolton make only their second visit to Roots Hall since that glorious Saturday, 25 years ago. Bolton were top and hadn’t lost a game; we were bottom and hadn’t won a game. The 5-2 home win was unexpected to say the least.
Darren Drysdale was the original appointment for tomorrow, but after Tuesday, it was never going to be him.
The identity of the new referee has been revealed. It is Declan Bourne from Nottingham. Whether we are able to overturn Bolton’s league supremacy over us remains to be seen.
He is in his first season as a League referee. He works in the police force having achieved a MA in Criminology from Nottingham Trent University.
This will be his second Southend match and there should be more quality on show than in his first one. A dreadful goalless match between two very poor teams at Stevenage. Yellows for Taylor and Olayinka and one of theirs. All criticism that day was reserved for the players.
He has taken charge of 20 matches thus far in his League career and his cautions are a shade below average at 56 and no red cards. Statistically improbable but he has had just 5 home wins in those 20 matches - perhaps a reflection of diminishing home advantage without crowds.
Assisting will be Paul Lister from Chertsey and Paul Kelly from Gillingham/Rochester. Fourth Official will be Tranmere Rovers supporter and ex-semipro player for Newtown (in the Welsh League), Anthony Da Costa, now from Cambridge.
