So it's an ex-Select Group Premier League referee at Roots Hall on Saturday. Man in charge is Robert Madley, one of two refereeing brothers from Ossett in West Yorkshire. I think the other one is the better official.

He was fast-tracked into Select Group status in only his fourth season and established himself in the top echelons of refereeing despite producing more than his share of shoddy performances. Then he was sacked by the PGMO for a social media indiscretion, harsh in my opinion unless they were looking for an excuse to get rid of him.

He decamped to Norway for a while and did a bit of refereeing there but has now returned to England and after some grassroots refereeing he is now back on the League List refereeing League One and League Two matches. He should be fine at this level and unlike some officials he has nothing to prove and is unlikely to be in the frame for promotion.

He has refereed Southend just four times before, the first two both in his first season, 2010/11. They were the drawn Cup match at Macclesfield (3 yellows for them, one for Prosser) and the home draw with Burton which saw a red card apiece (Sawyer for us).

The next Southend match was our impressive 3-0 home victory over Chesterfield in 2013/14. A caution for Thompson and 4 of theirs, and they got off very lightly with just the four.

Most recently, he took charge of the Scunthorpe home match in 2016/17 , when he was returning from injury. Lots of cards. Yellows for Wordsworth, Timlin and Leonard along with 4 yellows and a red for them ........ and we won 3-1 so unbeaten with him in charge.

His 9 matches so far this season have produced a decidedly average 28 yellows and no reds.

He will be assisted by Dan Cook from Braintree and Aaron Farmer from Colchester, disappointingly not a farmer, but an auditor. The latter likes to be noticed from my experiences of watching him in non-league football. Fourth Official is Ryan Whitaker from Bexleyheath.

Here's hoping it remains so ...:Worthy:
