Tomorrow’s match, our first ever visit to Forest Green, will be officiated by Lee Swabey, from Plymouth. A 37 year old who works as a Sports Manager for TGS Coaching. Previous employment included directorships of two now dissolved sports companies in Devonport (previously Plymouth Dock).
He is in his sixth season, although he missed a good part of two of those seasons through injury. We have not seen him much during this time – just the five matches (a win, a draw and 3 defeats).
The most recent was just a few days short of a year ago – the 2-1 defeat at Oxford. Yellow for McLaughlin and one of theirs.
Before that was the 4-1 away defeat at Portsmouth earlier last season. Again, a yellow card apiece (ours was Milligan) and he didn’t do us any favours in front of a crowd of nearly 17,000.
Previously was the 0-3 home defeat to Rochdale back in August this season. He cautioned Hyam and Hamilton and one of theirs.
Before that he brought up the curtain on the 2017/18 season taking charge of the home victory over Blackburn who we hadn’t played at home since the days of Brett Angell and Ian Benjamin. A win and all three yellow cards to them so all good there.
His only other Southend match was the 2-2 home draw with Fleetwood in April 2016 when the only card of the game was a yellow shown to Adam Thompson.
His card count is low with just 49 yellows and no reds from 20 games this season, although he hasn’t had a cardless match for over a year.
Assisting will be ex-Premiership "lino" John Flynn, an ex-Airman from Stratton St Margaret who was out of the game for 15 months after he claimed he was deliberately injured by referee Jon Moss in a training incident and Grant Taylor from Weston-on-Avon, once in Gloucester now Warwickshire. Fourth Official will be Dean Treleaven from Portsmouth.
