We have won each of our last three matches at Oldham, scoring 10 goals in the process whilst conceding only 2. In fact, we haven’t lost a League match at Oldham this century with the last League defeat there being in 1997/98, a game refereed by a young Mike Dean in his first season as a League referee. He booked Leo Roget. Since then, this fixture has been refereed by Craig Pawson and Kevin Friend and we even managed to survive the spurious sending off of Garry Richards by Trevor Kettle and still won there.
Will Saturday’s referee follow in those illustrious footsteps ? The man in charge is another one of the younger referees on the Football League, although in his fifth season. However, like so many of our signings, when he got on the League Referees List he promptly spent more time injured than refereeing. He now appears to be fully fit. He is Ollie Yates from Newcastle under Lyme and part of the Staffordshire FA Referee Tutor Team.
He has refereed Southend just twice before. Firstly in 2016/17 when he took charge of our 2-0 home defeat to Fleetwood. Yellows for Demetriou, Barrett and O’Neill and a couple of theirs. Little criticism of the referee after this one, plenty for the players and manager.
The other one was in 2018/19 for our 1-2 home defeat by Bristol Rovers. Plenty of cards, 7 in total. Our 3 went to Turner, Hart and Yearwood. Again masses of criticism – for the players.
This season he’s taken charge of 21 games with a slightly above average 70 yellows and 2 reds. These games included the FA Cup tie between Canvey Island and Boreham Wood.
Assisting will be Kevin Mulraine from Carlisle and Declan Ford, a military man from Lincoln. Fourth Official will be first year League referee, James Bell from Sheffield.
