The man in charge of tomorrow's match is Chris Sarginson from Stoke.

He is a thirteenth year referee who will be refereeing his fifteenth Southend match and, for me, he is one who falls very much into the "lucky to still be there" category.

His last Southend match was a rare victory - last season's 2-1 win at Stevenage in the League Cup thanks to a couple of goals from Kelman. Hutchinson got the only yellow of the match.

Before that was back in March 2018/19 in front of a nearly 16,000 crowd at Blackpool. Many felt he was unduly influenced by the big crowd and gave a bit of a “homer” performance. A 2-2 draw, we got 4 yellows (Dieng, Hyam, Demetriou and Cox) to their one.

Previously it was earlier that season at Shrewsbury. A miserable performance to give Shrewsbury their only win in their first fourteen matches of the season. Criticism mainly directed at the players and management rather than the referee who cautioned Demetriou, McLaughlin, Dieng and Cox plus one of theirs in our 2-0 defeat.

Before that was at Oldham in 16/17. We won and they got all the cards so all good there.

Previously was at Roots Hall just 7 weeks earlier with an inconsistent and fussy performance against Shrewsbury again. In a 1-1 draw, there were 7 yellows, ours going to Thompson, Ferdinand and Cox; their 4 included one for Deegan. Notwithstanding all the cards, it was not a good performance.

The Southend match before that was once again against, yes, Shrewsbury. It was the 2015/6 midweek away match and we came out on top 2-1 with goals from Atkinson and Hendrie. We had yellows for McQueen and O'Neill and a red for Timlin.

Before that, he was as a late replacement at Oxford in 2014/15. Deegan managed to pick up two yellows in 33 minutes, fast even by his standards. There was also a yellow for Payne and one of theirs. Deegan's second yellow was a little unsatisfactory as the referee didn't appear to even be awarding a foul until some unspecified intervention. All was well in the end as we won 3-2 and we also won the match Deegan was suspended for.

Earlier that same season it was the first of our four matches against Stevenage in 2014/15 season - a 2-0 home win and 2 yellows apiece, ours going to Clifford and Coulthirst. Not a good day for the man in the middle.

The season before saw his sub-standard performance at Fleetwood at the back end of 2013/14 (1-1), with yellows for Egan and Leonard.

Previously it was the away game at Plymouth in 2011/12 when we were leading 2-0 with about 5 minutes to go and finished up with a point. Yellows for Timlin, Martin and Dickinson and one of theirs.

Further back it was the inevitable Shrimps vs Shrimpers defeat in 2010/11 when we just shaded the yellows with 3 (Grant, Corr and Barker) against their 2. Then in the same season on New Year's Day at Oxford when we won and he booked loads of theirs and none of ours, so obviously there were no complaints.

Before that was the hollow victory against Stockport at the end of the 2009/10 season (yellow for Mvoto) and defeat at MK Dons the season before that (yellows for Grant, Clarke and Freedman).

This season he has shown an average or lower number of cards - 19 yellows and 1 red from 7 games.

The rest of the team are also regular Southend appointees: Greg Read from Addlestone near Woking and 50 year old Adrian Tranter (I believe he is the oldest Assistant on the list) from the Poole/Bournemouth area will be assisting. Fourth Official duties will be carried out by David Rock, a fully fledged League Referee from Hertford who is, by profession, is a qualified coach in a variety of different sports including football. He refereed that match at Dover last season and also this season's match against West Ham's kiddies in the EFL Trophy.
