Ben Smith - good book

Just finished a book by Ben Smith (although I don't remember him, he temporarily played for Southend under Rob Newman).

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Journeyman-odyssey-through-leagues-football/dp/1849548544

Recommend this highly! He has a lot of things to say about Southend-related people, including Rob Newman and Gary Hooper as well as a few other ex-players.

Yeah I finished it over the weekend too.Best book of its type that I've read since Gary Nelson's Left Foot Forward.

my brother taught him at Bramston school in Witham. He said he was a very bright young man. He spoke to him before he joined us and he was very excited. Saw it definitely as a step up. Didn't he get injured after a few seconds of coming on as sub and was never the same again.

I remember him being injured at the Meet the Blues day that season. I remember the whole squad doing a training exercise but he didn't join in, he was just running lengths of the pitch. I actually felt really sorry for him. That was compounded when a fan asked him what his name was.

Tad harsh.Perhaps you didn't like all the non-league stuff,(which personally I found quite interesting)?

I'm not sure it was all that harsh. There were some small sections that had been repeated more than once, explaining the same thing. There were also stories I'm not sure needed to be in there. He also went into a lot of detail about some matches that didn't really need it. At times I also felt he was talking too much like a footballer, and not enough like a writer.

This is coming from someone that isn't in the business, and given that Napster is, you have to say he's probably picked up on many other things as well.

Instead of assuming what Napster did or didn't like about the book, why don't you ask him, and ask him why he feels Ben Smith would have benefited from having an editor?

As it happens I reckon I'll finish the book tonight when I get in from work. I've actually really enjoyed reading it, and think it gives a really interesting incite into lower league football. It just isn't perfect!

You're grumpy today.(Easily explained by comments elsewhere).Sorry about that, btw.(As it happens we're waiting for news of a good friend's operation today).

As I said, I thought the book was "interesting" and certainly not "perfect"!

From my writer mate http://www.amazon.com/Charles-Davis/e/B001JS2IE8 I understand most books that make it into print have an editor these days.

ps.Had no idea that Naps. was in publishing.Obviously don't spend enough time on SZ.

I seem to recall he was the first ever player to suffer the curse....in that he was the first player to be sponsored by a new SUFC website called "ShrimperZone"
