Having just watched Will Ferrel's "Elf" on Channel 4, My flatmate Rich has just made the scandalous comment that Will Ferrel is the best comedy actor ever... All of us around him gave him an initial look of disgust while he tried to explain himself, but then another of my flatmates found Waterboy on Channel 5 and tried to pass off that Adam Sandler is the best comedy actor ever.

Better than Will Ferrell, but not a patch on others... Robin Williams, Steve Martin and, my personal favourite, John Candy all excel past Ferrel.

I'm putting John Candy forward... Planes, Trains and Automobiles is quite possibly the funniest film ever produced, and he's brilliant in Uncle Buck. Had he not died, I'm pretty sure he'd still be great.

Never....by a long stretch....

David Jason or Ronnie Barker by a million miles....

Although I could be voting from a different age bracket...

I think Steve Martin is worthy of mention then especially as he played his part in the John Candy movie you mention. That scene in the motel room was a bit of a classic.

"Where is your other hand?"

"Between two pillows"

"THOSE AREN'T PILLOWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

John Candy all the way, even though I really loved Jim Carey in Liar Liar

John Belushi - genius..... Carrey is a one trick pony...and a highly irritating one at that.

Alastair Sim?

Eddie Murphy gets a nomination on the specific proviso that nothing he's done since the late 80s is counted.

Christopher Guest.....

The entire Monty Python cast?

Sid James..

Ofcourse....what a top suggestion....used to live where a lot of the Carry On movies were filmed (ie in and around Pinewood).....seen them all, several times, and never seem to tire of them.

Green coming your way....
