The Minerva was a real rough diamond of a pub and well worth a visit before gigs at The Kursaal - last time I was over there though it was an Indian restaurant called 'The Tiffin' (I think) > but I'd be delighted if all the old Teds were back in there again.

And, IIRC, one of the reasons the Kursaal Stopped hosting gigs as the bulk of the bands who wanted to play there were considered to be "punk" and the local council kept refusing licences due to the highly publicised Ted V Punk Tear ups which happened in 76/77

Tiffins is closed and is being refurbed as a high end eaterie

lived in exeter for 5 years, great place, great boozers all over the place. And as you wrote..newquay steam & ruddles are top beers,..and dont forget westcountry cider...im sure you remember it & had a few.."NATCH"..always drunk ruddles ,in the old intercity 125 buffetbar.. here in Germany, at our club..deutsch-english club, someone always brings back ,for our "bierfest" cider & old speckled hen..also a great beer

The dreaded Natch cider. That stuff was worse than ebola for rotting your insides. Sadly, Newquay Steam Beer is no more.

Granted, Southend is a bit thin on the ground for decent ale pubs but lets be honest here, does the average football supporter travel to away grounds for the beer or the football.

A bit of both. Personally having done all League Two grounds, my away games this season will be partly dictated by which towns have the best pubs. York already booked up on the train.

where i lived in exeter, redhills, only a few miles away was a farm ,where i always bought a barrel of "natch" everything was thrown in to the cider,so it could "ferment"!!!the farmers teeth had all rotted, just little stumps & when he smiled at you, with his red cheeks,it was sad..but still always bought the stuff..especially when we went to london to watch england play, all my southend mates demanded that i bought a barrel with me

You are not Micky.B...my old mate, & gent that helped me out many a time at away games?? Gus & mick ,were like batman & robin, two Ronnies, the two coppers from the "sweeney"..alway together, happy days

..... nope, not guilty except maybe to the "gent" bit; I did know Keith very well though.

The Red Cow near St David's station. Think they're still looking for that barrel of cider.

if i remember!!!there was only a few of us there..gus,mick.b.joe,gareth?? myself...anymore????met kev on the train(or in the pub??)..Gus & Mick had done this" trick" before..old hands..been in that pub quite a few times after..happy days, well at least until i got to paddington
