In 2017-18 we ranked 4th in the division for biggest agent spend with £226,258 splashed on agents, following the signings of Michael Kightly, Rob Kiernan, Michael Turner and Josh Wright and extensions for Theo Robinson, Jason Demeteriou and Anton Ferdinand.

Over the last year this we had the 5th lowest - matching our current league position - with a far more respectable £44,658 following the signings of Tom Hopper, Sam Barratt, Harry Lennon and co. over the summer.

Unsurprisingly Sunderland are top in the division and there's a fairly strong correlation between agent spend and league position.

Accrington Stanley - £4,815
Wycombe -£19,500
Gillingham - £28,088
Rochdale - £42,497
Southend United - £44,658
Blackpool- £45,838
Walsall - £55,499
AFC Wimbledon - £62,173
Shrewsbury Town - £77,042
Doncaster Rovers - £88,753
Plymouth Argyle - £91,370
Bristol Rovers -£96,852
Luton Town - £124,069
Scunthorpe United - £126,207
Burton Albion -£131,002
Bradford City £154,410
Coventry City - £155,909
Oxford United -£160,678
Peterborough United -£176,465
Fleetwood Town - £183,356
Portsmouth - £183,790
Charlton Athletic -£205,095
Barnsley - £428,580
Sunderland - £2,873,033

I am reliably informed some time ago that we had run into trouble by not paying agents.

So does that £226,258 mean for contracts signed in just that 12 months or could it be what we actually payed agents.

Likewise if Sunderland are paying agents monthly, over the length of the contract. Then obviously their figures would look distorted.

Money isn't everything - £45000 on Hopper, Barratt & Lennon sounds like a much better investment than £226000 on Michael Kightly, Michael Turner and Josh Wright (plus Kiernan who may yet be a good investment, although we've had to wait a long time for him)

Player for player (Kiernan aside) I think they're all better. Jury is still out on Barratt obviously, but the early season cameos I saw from him were promising.

Of course, this doesn't take into account wages. I'd imagine transfer fees were zero or negligible

Luton are the big winners in that list, just £124k spent on agents fees, and current run away league leaders and highly likely playing Championship football next season.
