The last visit of Bolton to Roots Hall was that, oh so memorable, 5-2 win 20 years ago (unless of course they'd actually arrived before it was called off a couple of months ago).

Tomorrow's referee is the original appointee, Charles Breakspear from Walton-on-Thames.

After Saturday it's a case of ....... meet the new ref, same as the old ref.

Another shaven headed clone (perhaps they really think it makes them referee like Collina ? I've got news for them !) and on the evidence of what I've seen of him before there is no reason to expect an improvement.

He has refereed six Southend matches before and in the first two he sent off an opposing player. Sadly we only got a defeat and a draw (and subsequent penalty shoot-out defeat) to show for our numerical advantage. The last four we did somewhat better picking up two wins and a two draws and a good number of bookings !

He is in his fourth season as a League referee and, for me, he is another one who falls into the "lucky to still be there" category. He has a high card count with 144 yellows and 8 reds from 35 games and hasn't had a cardless match for nigh on three years. Unusually 6 of his 8 reds have been shown to home players.

The appointers seem to share my view of him as his last 8 matches have all been League Two games and he's probably only got this as he was the original ref for this fixture and the one who called it off.

Those previous matches were, firstly, our 3-1 home defeat to Morecambe in 2013/14. Their sub got a red just 7 minutes after coming on and there was a yellow apiece (Timlin for us) and in 2014/15 he presided over the JPT match at Wimbledon where unusually all four cards (3 yellows and a red) went to the home team.

His next Southend match was his unconvincing performance in 2014/15's 0-0 home draw with Burton - a yellow for Prosser and three of theirs. This match came at the beginning of that dire run of 6 hours football without a goal from either team at Roots Hall.

This was followed by last season's home match against Barnsley which we won 2-1. We also won the bookings 4-2 (Bentley, White, Wordsworth and Piggott) and he gave them a penalty.

Then comes his appearance, as a late and wholly inadequate replacement, at home to Crewe last season. This match we drew 1-1 and we smashed them on bookings 5-1 (Coker, Bolger, Wordsworth, Barnett and Worrall). He gave us not one but two penalties. Barnett missed his but Jack Payne put his away for a stoppage time equalizer.

Finally, his most recent Southend match was the comfortable 3-0 win at MK Dons earlier this season when his performance did not attract any adverse criticism (other than his again rather haphazard measuring of defensive wall distances!). A caution for Coker and three of theirs.

So that's 9 cautions against us in his last two matches at Roots Hall with Wordsworth booked in both.

Assisting are Michael Webb from Woking and Ian Rathbone from the whimsically named Semilong in Northamptonshire. Fourth Official is Londoner, Neil Davies.

Yay, It's old Charlie with his 15 yards wall!

As is the one for Charlton !

Didn't endear himself at Brisbane Rd on Saturday by all accounts. Sending off an O's player midway through 1st half and then sending their new Manager to the stands.

Well after tonight's performance, I can see why Charlie has already been demoted to League 2 games! Terrible.

Poor tonight IMHO. Failed to give a penalty for a clear foul on Ranger and only gave Pratley a yellow for his rugby tackle on McLaughlin that warranted a straight red

That law needs looking at.

There's way too much of this "taking one for the team" in modern football.

That was a professional foul and should be treated, as such. Maybe it will cut that out.

I'd rather see that red carded than some of these so called reckless tackles or that Scunthorpe player who kicked out a little at Demetriou the other week.

Another like our friend on Saturday, thinking if you try and look like Howard Webb it might disguise you're not.

This is probably why sin binning is being looked at - I don't think fouls like that deserve reds, but exactly what use are yellow cards in that situation

I can see why the 'red' was 50/50 as there was another defender who could have possibly got across, but oh dear me how was that not a pen. It's not fair that refs don't have to explain themselves after decisions like that. And he had a perfect view of it too.

I would not have said it was a penalty, as it started outside the box, then pulled him down... nothing was given, he should have pulled it back for a free kick.

Good point 'Jay'.

That said, if we are going to have a sin-bin. Make it 30 minutes or something.

Otherwise a fella commits a foul and goes and puts his feet up for 10 minutes and has a rest.

Not a penalty for me. 6 and two halves.

Mind you, if it was at The Den it would have been! :winking:

I just feel there needs to be harsher punishment (than just a yellow) for players that make no attempt to play the ball. Agree with the ten minutes, in that time the ball would have propably been in play for only 2 of those!!
