CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL MY FRIENDS WHO WERE BORN IN THE

1940's, 50's, 60's and 70's !

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they carried us and lived in houses made of asbestos.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese, raw egg products, loads of bacon and processed meat, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes or cervical cancer.

Then after that trauma, our baby cots were covered with bright colored lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets or shoes, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking!!!

As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle.

Take away food was limited to fish and chips, no pizza shops, McDonalds, KFC, Burger King, Benjies.

Even though all the shops closed at 6.00pm and didn't open on the weekends, somehow we didn't starve to death!

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.

We could collect old drink bottles and cash them in at the corner shop and buy Spangles, Lovehearts, Bubble Gum and some penny squibs to blow up frogs with.

We ate cakes, white bread and real butter and drank soft drinks with sugar in it, but we weren't overweight because......

WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. We built tree houses and cubby houses and played in river beds with matchbox cars.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 399 channels on SkyTV, no video tape movies or DVD’s, no surround sound, no mobile phones, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat rooms..........WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no Lawsuits from these accidents.

Only girls had pierced ears!

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

You could only buy Easter Eggs and Hot Cross Buns at Easter time.......no - really!

We were given air guns and catapults for our 10th birthdays!!

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just yelled for them!

Mum didn't have to go to work to help dad make ends meet!

RUGBY and CRICKET had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!! Getting into the team was based on MERIT AND NOT DUE TO BLACKMAIL, THREATS AND GUILT FROM THE PAST... strange but true!

Our teachers used to belt us with big sticks and leather staps and bullies always ruled the playground at school.

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of..

They actually sided with the law!

Our parents didn't invent stupid names for their kids like 'Kiora' and 'Blade' and 'Ridge' and 'Vanilla'

This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever!

The past 70 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned HOW TO

DEAL WITH IT ALL!

And YOU are one of them!

CONGRATULATIONS!

Hate to nit pick but Asboesstos poisoning dosnt kick in untill about 50 years after your affected . Lead poisioning is also quite slow.

"Mum didn't have to go to work to help dad make ends meet! "
Not actuallly true pre 60's My Nan's would have other jobs

The past 70 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.
Well adaption of existing ideas really (the mictrochip for instance was an evolution of making valves smaller)

Our teachers used to belt us with big sticks and leather staps and bullies always ruled the playground at school.

Also a higher instances of of unreported abuse and over zealous use of punishment (i.e it just hardened those already disposed to it) Mind you you could and did fight and beat the bullies (well i did any way ;) )

The liberty was there though , trading liberty for security never works (neither does beating a generation into blind submission)

Well techinically it is your generation that has raised us up to be like this and you generation that are working in the schools "teaching" us. Also the thing saying how noone was scared of being taken then, but everyone is now, I would have thought that the people who are doing the kidnappings etc. were probably born in the 40s 50s 60s 70s so ner. :p
ps anyone watch that thing on channel4 last night about the 2 girls?

I blame the PC brigade for that...took away all parenting and policing rights.....

true...i'm not sure where it comes from, my 10yr old already has the 'its alright i'll just buy another one' mentality which she gets a rollicking for. But where does it come from, Mrs F and myself have to work hard for everything we get and certainly don't spoil the little un.......it just seems to be an attitude of the times !:(

CONGRATULATIONS!

I was trying to explain to one of the children at school today that when i was their age, we only has 3 TV channels and they didnt really start until 3pm ish when we got in from school, no daytime TV, no cartoon network, football was watched on a Sunday Afternoon when the Big match was on (too young to stay up for Match of the Day). My first video game was ping pong with two white lines batting a square 'ball' backwards and forwards boy was i luck to have one of those.

Also that a treat for us was a portion of chips from the chippie, wrapped up in proper newspaper !!! If we wanted a burger, it was Wimpey and that was served on a plate with a knife and fork. I dont think i had a Maccy D until i was about 15/16 !

Anyway the shock on her face was a picture to be seen as she couldnt comprehend the 'hardships' we had to endure but i dont think i'd change my childhood for anything.

Woah young 'un, you're treading on dangerous ground. It's since adults lost the ability to freely reprimand any kid for misbehaving that all the problmes arose. In the past, you knew you'd get a slap from your mum (or worse, your dad, or even worse - both!) if you did something wrong; if you were playing out or at a friend's house and you did something wrong, another adult or a neighbour would give you a clip round the ear; if you were caught by the local bobby doing something daft, he'd give you a clip round the ear; if you did something wrong at school, the teacher would give you a smack or if bad enough, you'd go to the Head for the cane. Then you'd probably get more of the same when you got home. This all taught you to RESPECT adults and to RECOGNISE when YOU had done something wrong.

It is totally down to the PC brigade that parents now have less rights than almost anyone you care to mention. My 13 year old daughter can go to the doctors and ask to be put on the pill and no-one will tell me about it. It is all wrong, and the fact that any youngsters turn out ok these days is down to the fact that they must have pretty special parents to be able to raise their kids well within the constraints.

And who's fault is that? Certainly not the young generation of today. No it was the 'Baby Boomers', who shouted for individual rights so loudly during the 60s and 70s and yet now these same people can't understand why a generation of brats has been produced. This is nothing new, though. The sort of people this thread is designed to criticised are already pregnant for the fourth time, unaware of who the father is, not even giving a thought to the children they are rearing, and the life that they might have. Alas, the Boomers really did **** things up, and now it seems like its too late to reverse their mistakes.

Oh, and that's a load of nonsense too. Its just patently not true: It is these very people you're heralding as 'great' people that have managed to raise a society filled with disrespect and other malignant qualities. The "problem solvers", have by your own admission surely, created more problems than they have solved...

Actually you hit the nail on the head with personal responsibility.

No one is owed automatic respect , no one. because that means you blindly obey what your told. Those who have made something of their lives in society know this . And at the very least expressed a form of communication to ask who the other people are around them . If they want respect why should it be given . This is done by knowing another person and learning about them
IF someone thinks they are and sets out to impose it on others their deluding themselves and others .
Equally No one has the right to abuse harm or threaten another (espically those weaker or younger then them ) to impose or bring across their point.

As an adult your supposed to have learnt how to do those understand why people react in away they do.

A generation should be raised to understand themselves and the society around them . They do so by being allowed to question , yet having bounderys that are flexible (not a near totalitarian ideal of victorian England) but not almost etheric (like those of the past 15-20 years allowing almost anything with out any understanding).

Doubt is a sign of maturaty , questioning is to be encouraged . If you a person or structure cant take rational discussion or query it propably has little right to exist .
